About this deal

I would love to get extras or different colors for some of the city figures I have wandering around my modulars. You can kind of fit him on top of the dish area, but the build for our pirate buddy doesn’t make him easy to put… well, anywhere. Seven polybags (officially 'pre-packs', I learned in Billund ) each build a separate module; see them all here.

Image two shows the big rear engine mounts, with some SNOT panelling disguising Technic beams, and a plate with some minor greebling and two droids. I was delighted to see how the radar dishes are attached to the 2x2-2x2 brackets using an aircraft wheel hub, which effectively acts as a stud reverser here. There are so many different sets with varied themes to choose from nowadays, that almost anyone can choose one that meets their specific tastes and interests. Since it's completely hidden in the build, it could have been any color - Black probably would have been more cost-efficient since there's already one of those elsewhere in the set - so I can't help but think Bright Red was a deliberate choice to include LEGO's most iconic element. She's got a curvaceous torso, similar to her regular black outfit 2, but with a Classic Space-esque motif which continues onto the legs, and round the back; best of all, she's got a spiffing hoodie which is a separate piece, and I hope we'll see more of that outside the Movie range. In the first image, you can see how the engine intakes are created as SNOT-mounted castle windows; the octagonal section at the lower right contains an intriguing trench whose walls a formed of 2x4 SNOT brackets: it too me a moment or two to work out what this was for. This is probably my favourite bit of homage in this whole set; they're adorable and will be really useful.

The element selection of course plays a big part too, such as the 'loudspeakers' and the ribbed jet engines, and the stickered parts heavily reference designs and fonts from that era. Anyone who has played either of those games may not unable to get that thought out of their brain until they fit one together. The rows of computer screens on the left are shout-outs to these pieces which sadly are no longer produced; centre-top is a temperature-gauge panel featuring the characters LL2079 1. Note that the jumper plates (centre-bottom) are the newer mold design with a lip and central stud-grip; to the right of these are four 12L flexible hoses which appear in several Movie sets. These are Black slopes with modern prints; not the original 1979 prints, however those classic designs do get paid respect. This is the best view to appreciate the ship's overall shape: the sides slope gently at the front, with the angle becoming steeper around the centre section, until it sweeps outward around the wings, and tapering again at the rear.

There are more droid body parts, here used for their original purpose, and accompanied by the original droid arms, which are still in regular use today. The inside is roomy, and the Robot Pilot sits comfortably in what is essentially a flying cockpit with wings. I'm not sure how many of these (or at least their costumes) were in the Movie; certainly Emmet did the robot head thing later in the film, and Benny is Benny.Being smaller, it's far more practical than the 6X12 canopy and will make a great starting point for spacecraft. It arrived as a box of bits, all jumbled up and in none of the numbered bags big sets tend to come in straight from the factory these days: 70816 Bennys Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! If you posted links to neo-classic space (which I still enjoy going to, btw), then you don't have a point about ignoring LUGNET because of the 'archaic nature' of it. Two modern printed control panels sit under red and green lights: presumably Benny has trouble remembering left from right. And of course it uses the Trans-Yellow windshield, which comes with a great sticker of a cross-hair target - but I couldn't possibly add that to such a rare part!

I'm surprised that these molds have survived for as long as they have, 22 years between those two sets. Space builders are going to want to pick up a few copies of this set, which is sure to kick of a new frenzy of Neo Classic Space creations. Firstly, the wedge-shaped profile is most apparent from this angle: the rise from the skinny nose to the bulky tail is quite dramatic, and the angle perfectly extends the rake of the cockpit canopy. In the real world, Finn was flying Benny's Spaceship around playing with it, when his father, the Man Upstairs shows up, and gets not too happy from what he saw when his son was playing with his Lego collection. If the item comes direct from a manufacturer, it may be delivered in non-retail packaging, such as a plain or unprinted box or plastic bag. At that moment, I knew that the movie was going to be something different from what LEGO had given us before. The little shuttles stay on pretty well, despite using only a single hinge, and still make for nifty little additions. The big cockpit canopy can open to ninety degrees, revealing a spacious interior with seating for three, even allowing for hoodies, airtanks or pieces of resistance.
