As prolific as ever, Lynda La Plante is delivering one of these novels per year and I’ve found it fascinating to watch the character we’re used to watching as a Detective Inspector, starting out in uniform and learning the ropes.It is interesting to watch investigations being dealt with “old school” without the aid of mobile phones and the internet but for me it gave me the chance to watch the characters develop and see how their skills and styles could compliment and hinder the investigations in equal measure. And as the hunt for the widow's lodger hits dead end after dead end, it seems that the prime suspect has vanished without a trace. I have lived in China for the past 2O years,so getting English novels is not easy,although found odd ones on the internet here. The heiress of an immense family fortune, she now resides in a luxurious care home; her mind and memory fading fast.

The great thing about these prequel novels is that we go back even further, to when a policewoman’s uniform included a matching handbag – useful for filling with stones and hitting criminals I guess.
