About this deal

The events on the liner present us with a ‘locked liner mystery’ and parts of this are very good and feel very Christie-esque which fits nicely with the 1930s timeline.

The dynamics between the family are vividly portrayed and we have everything from wealthy gilded cages to philandering. A favorite era gotten fairly for its appearance but almost not at all for its plot and mores context.

The vast bulk of the story takes place on the cruise liner as Lena gets involved with a very rich family and secrets are revealed as well as murders! The cabin is first class and Lena has never had such luxury, in fact she has a suitcase of clothes from Maggie because she didn’t own anything grand enough for the first class dining room of the Queen Mary.

This is one of those mysteries where I suspected everyone of everything by the end, assuming ill intent and secret motives on behalf of the whole cast. This was an unusual variation on the genre of murder mysteries set in the golden age, dealing with mixed race, dated attitudes to ladies and the social standing variation between the English and the Americans.

Postage charges vary according to the weight of your items and the destination country, and are calculated at the checkout. I suppose its a murder mystery and it did have the feel of an Agatha Christie novel at times but I saw it more as a social commentary piece and the prejudice of not only race but also class and indeed sex. However, Lena’s whiff of stardom seems to satisfy the family that she is suitable company and she’s certainly glamorous enough to fit in. From past experience, I wasn't sure that I liked olives very much, but Charlie already thought me naive on several counts, a state of affairs that I wasn't keen on.

If Charlie Bacon really started to annoy me, then I'd simply lock myself away in my cabin until we reached New York and emerge fresh faced and ready to dazzle Benny Walker. Lena is a biracial woman who passes as white, and her time at sea shows her warring with herself, feeling like she has to pick a side, an identity to show the world. Overall, though despite these reservations I do enjoy this book as it has a lot more depth to it than other books in this genre. Also maybe not that much of a mystery, cause i think alot of people might have guessed who the killer was since the author was trying hard to misdirect but overall engaging and i liked the time spent reading this book. Central to events on the liner is the wealthy Abernathy family who Lena meets on the first night on board the luxury ship. It took a little for me to warm up to the story line, but as secrets unfold, you will quickly be turning the pages and enjoying the hustle and bustle. None of the family seem particularly happy, with a lot of sniping at dinner and all the vices of drinking, gambling and … It makes Lena nostalgic for her father and the easy way they got along, and also Maggie who despite her difficult marriage and the terrible drama of Tommy’s murder, has always been like a sister to Lena. As Lena navigates the Abernathy’s increasingly bizarre family dynamic, she realizes that her greatest performance won't be for an audience, but for her life.
