About this deal

So we all agree that when WOTC changed the fat pack from Saviors of Kamigawa to 9th edition, that it was a good thing, because it was no longer something that is for collectors, and just sitting there, but now, with the most recent ones having basic lands in them, you can just crack open the 9 boosters, and build whatever deck you want. Either way, Yeong-Hao Han delivers a dreamy, almost impressionist take on Kaladesh’s Aether-driven natural environment. They have an almost entirely monochrome color palette with only a hint of the land’s respective color somewhere in the center. From the glossary of the Comprehensive Rules (November 17, 2023— The Lost Caverns of Ixalan) Basic Land Type There are five “basic land types”: Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. One of Magic's most iconic features is its stunning artwork—even non-players sometimes collect the cards simply for their art.

After a couple of years with only the original lands we then the Ice Age lands and our first iteration of snow-lands. Not only do I simply enjoy these artworks, I like how they tell a story; the sun starts off to the side of the monuments in Amonkhet, before coming between them in Hour of Devastation (prophesied as the chosen time Nicol Bolas would reveal himself). To date, there are two basic lands for each color — Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest and their snow-covered versions for white, blue, black, red, and green, respectively — and one for colorless — Wastes. The scheme stopped accepting new Gurus in October 2000 and the whole thing was closed down by February 2001. Not to disappoint, this basic doesn’t paint an entirely serene scene: in the distance, a figure looms. Our list is capped off with quite possibly one of the most popular basic forests in the game: Jung Park’s Innistrad Forest. When you're just starting out, a big lot of basic lands goes a long way, letting you get started on deck construction. The Guru are fakes given to me by someone taking pity on my quest to collect the basics knowing full well I couldn't bring myself to invest in them.

The Crimson Vow bundles actually came with a bunch of these lands in foil and non foil, which makes getting a thematic manabase together is pretty easy. Lands are grounding in several ways and they may be appreciated for what they are both in and out of the context of Magic. Masques lands I don't love, they feel like they lack cohesion, they don't take me to a place or give me a good idea of what it is about. Could you imagine MTG where the only way to get basic lands is via intro packs and event decks, and if you attend leagues and prereleases? The MPS series already contained some cards but they were all just reprints of Ravnica lands up till this point. Then we have the 14 missing lands from the total 16 from the Simplified Chinese Alternate Art Portal release. These were the staple full-art lands to include if you were looking to bling out your decks for a long time. While I love the ultra-red mountains from Unhinged it’s refreshing to have a Mountain that doesn’t have any red whatsoever. Theros: Beyond Death featured full-art "Nyx" basics with a large mana symbol on a starfield background. Oh well, I'll stick with theme deck vs theme deck in that game, since building a deck from scratch in that game is much more impossible.

With Pokemon TCG, I have tons of cards, from multitude of sets, that I bought from boosters, because I really don't want any control over what cards I have, but yet, to play the game, you need basic energies. Any object that refers to a "Basic land" refers only to the 11 lands with the Basic supertype and not any other land with a basic land type. I am a big fan of these lands and rate it very highly as far as sets of lands rather than individual art.

I think having them predominantly on Swamps with a few Mountains included best fits the Joker’s colors. Not only is there new art on basic lands with almost every new set, but the layout of the cards themselves has shifted over the years as well. I also love the range on lands from images you would expect to commonly find across the Earth, to those that are more exotic but still realistic, to completely fantastical landscapes forged of metal, or defying gravity, ones depicted as urban areas analogous to the natural counterparts, ones that are more representations, or indeed the truly fantastical ones. If you’re interested in some more blinged-out basics for your Commander or Modern decks, TCGPlayer has your back.
