About this deal

An index to all sites is provided, with each monument named, given an National Grid reference number, and the relevant 1:50 000 scale Landranger sheet number so that sites may be exactly pinpointed. Sites can be pinpointed exactly using the grid reference number and the relevant 1:50 000 scale sheet number. This depth of stretcher bar provides a more modern look and is not as easily framed at a later date. The primary reason I bought this map for is to quickly look up grid references through out the whole of the U. The base map has altitude colouring to indicate the topography and shows the present day road network.

Symbols arranged according to the period (Palaeo/Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, Roman, and Medieval) and use (civil, defence, domestic, industrial, religious/ritual, and funerary/burial) show locations of the sites. The time related colour coding is very useful, and for the uninitiated the information guides are useful. Ancient monuments date from earliest times to about ad 100, and archaeological periods within this time span are distinguished by the use of different symbols and colours on the map. What I have found is that I have spent a great deal of time studying this map and its fascinating historical information. We like to know what's around us as we travel, and this map is a great incentive for taking the lesser-travelled roads. Surrounding the map are numerous panels providing further information including contact details of relevant organizations, photos, drawings and profiles, a glossary of archaeological terms, a chronological table placing British events in a wider historical context, reading recommendations, etc. Map, mounted on cloth, is in very good condition; also bound in is a 36pp Foreword, Introduction and COmbined Index to North and South Sheets which is tanned with some spotting; card cover rather tanned with some marks and shelfwear.
