About this deal

Even better than the personalities, at least in my opinion, are the other two modules: Plans and Plots, both of which are means by which Nightweave influences the game to her favor. Similarly, there’s the Corrin Evertail module that chronicles the life and adventures of the legendary founder of Everdell through a series of interlocking critters and location cards! Unlike the more long-term effects of the plan cards, plots are triggered when Nightweave takes the prepare-for-season action. Before you could almost work out if you should play a card based on its point value since you knew Rugworts played card would be 2 points. That’s right, the solo opponent in Mistwood also adheres to the shifting nature of the seasons the same way as when playing a multiplayer game of Everdell!

The information provided here is as complete and accurate as possible; however, product images, colours and/or specifications (inc. The box cover makes it look like an epic adventure where you (and potentially a friend) face off against Nightweave, but all that really happens is Nightweave is another player playing the base game of Everdell. You can also see most of the cards that Nightweave picks up and giving them low point cards from various card effects may seem terrible, but if you give 1- or 2-point cards this will help reduce the chance of Nightweave playing the high point cards that they may have acquired over the course of the game. The main theme of the expansion is that Nightweave is taking over the wood and you need to fight to prevent that happening. Thus, I’m immensely excited to be able to review Mistwood; the latest expansion to Everdell which introduces a completely new solo mode where you will be competing against the cunning and villainous spider Nightweave! The back of the box makes it obvious that it is an expansion to the base game and shows the new components and lists the various modules that are included (Figure 2).

Rather than simply rolling a D8 die and nabbing the corresponding card from the central tableau, the modus operandi of the solo opponent in Mistwood is far more cunning and interactive. But deeper within the wood, a mysterious threat has been patiently waiting, making plans and sinister plots… Will the fair valley survive the webbed takeover of the clever spider Nightweave and her army of spiderlings? If you were ever to hand cards to Nightweave they are shuffled into their hand and they receive a victory point for each (resources also give a victory points instead of being collected by Nightweave). Early stages of play might see her deploy one of her minions, known as spiderlings, to occupy a worker placement spot on the main board which prohibits you from gathering resources again much like when playing Everdell multiplayer.

She might force you to discard adjacent cards from the central tableau when acquiring a card for yourself or impose a greater restriction upon which cards are available for you. Not only does this add an element of unpredictability but the Personalities module also ensures that the central card tableau never runs the risk of stagnating as more cards are cycled through compared to competing against the solo opponent in the base game of Everdell. Legendary cards also enter the mix, which are legends of certain woodland creatures and structures (such as King North’s Treasury that replaces the Clocktower and Jor Goldwing that replaces the Bard).
