The book also has reproductions of notebook pages of other photographers, along with magazine clippings, press cards, letters and other ephemera. High above Paris, Marc Riboud’s Eiffel Tower Painter (1953) dances with his paintbrush – hat tilted at a jaunty angle, a cigarette dangling from his lips. And indeed, the challenges are sometimes far more grievous than, say, the possibility of overexposing Tri-X.

His form is mirrored by his shadow on the ground – and also mirrored, elsewhere in the book, in Susan Meiselas’ portrait of Lena, from her Carnival Strippers series (again, link has some nudity). Its value there may yet prove even greater than its original workaday function; an enduringly accessible record of what and how photographers saw for nearly a century. I'm still not certain, though, whether it's an argument in favour of motor drives and taking more frames, or the opposite.

Its amusing to me that Contact sheets are now available as stand alone works of art, even I have enlarged a contact sheet to display as “art” a kind of mini movie of 36 frames. Presenting a remarkable selection of contact sheets and related material by 67 Magnum photographers, Magnum Contact Sheets lays bare the creative methods, strategies and editing processes behind some of the world’s most iconic images — was the final image a set-up, or a serendipitous encounter; did the photographer work to extract the potential from a situation, or was it the fabled ‘decisive moment’? Getting to handle and see amazing work up close and personal as well as being given the opportunity to look through the viewfinder after he composed a shot. I’ve mentioned before how, for me, the photographers’ reflections add immeasurably to the value of book.

It was a much anticipated birthday present which, due to covid, was posted rather than handed to me. This landmark publication provides the reader with a depth of understanding and a critical analysis of the story behind a photograph, the process of editing it, and the places and ways in which the selected photographs were used. Addressing key questions of photographic practice - was the final image a set-up, or a serendipitous encounter; did the photographer work diligently to extract the potential from a situation, or was the fabled 'decisive moment' at play?
