About this deal

They slag each other endlessly, each trying to outdo the other and at times ganging up on one of the group of there's a bigger laugh to be had. The film also stars Angeline Ball, Maria Doyle, Bronagh Gallagher, Glen Hansard, Andrew Strong, Colm Meaney, and Andrea Corr. This volume brings together under one cover Roddy Doyle's three acclaimed novels about the Rabbite family from Dublin. The Van was a little tougher, and the Rabbittes were sometimes actually sadistic particularly with the dog. Once I started looking at his novels though, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that he was the mastermind behind The Commitments, a movie I love.

I recommend the books, and I'll definitely go in for more of the short stories, but overall, I prefer books that don't need to hug it out in the end. The film deals with themes of unemployment and self-worth, as Brendan "Bimbo" Reeves ( Donal O'Kelly) and Larry ( Colm Meaney) cope with losing their jobs and embark on a partnership to sell fried food from the eponymous van.About a boy, who decides to form a soul group with his mates to bring the people's music to the people. Jimmy Rabbitte, just a tick out of school, gets a brilliant idea: to put a soul band together in Barrytown, his slum home in north Dublin. It's clear through his writing, that Roddy knows that it's like to lose your job - and we see it very well through Jimmy Sr's hopelessness, shame and knowledge about daytime tv.

Set during the heady days of Ireland’s brief, euphoric triumphs in the 1990 World Cup, The Van is a tender and hilarious tale of male friendship and family life. These developed into the novella short story collection Two Pints in 2012 and Two More Pints in 2014. Doyle's sparkling second novel observes the progression of twenty-year-old Sharon's pregnancy and its impact on the Rabbitte family - especially on her father, Jimmy Sr - with with, candor, and surprising authenticity.

Georgina "Gina" Rabbitte – sharon's daughter, born in The Snapper and featured as a toddler in The Van, often repeating in baby talk the profanity used by family members. The Barrytown Trilogy, published by Vintage, brings Roddy Doyle’s three acclaimed novels featuring the unforgettable Rabbitte family together in one volume. A few remarkable and lovable characters in there, but I felt like I was reading a 150 pages long short story. The first is this chuckling wind-up, not really about the family but following the eldest son who forms a soul band out of the whitest of whities that falls apart due to personalities. Martin Doyle, "Roddy Doyle adds his Two Pints worth to marriage equality Yes vote campaign", The Irish Times, 1 May 2015.
