About this deal

When we truly value ourselves and others, we revel just enough for social appropriateness without being deceptive. This book is heavy going and there is a lot to take in which means it's all too much to remember, I would recommend just focusing on one chapter at a time and putting that into practice otherwise there's an information overload and you just end up forgetting it all. I’ve always thought it sounded interesting, and I’ve wanted to read Ryan’s other book, ‘Nerve’, forever, but the mixed reviews and relatively low rating on Goodreads made me hesitant to pick up ‘Charisma’, fearing disappointment. Conversely, responding respectfully and tactfully with a dignified change of topic or vague statement when we are hit with an onslaught of revealing and personal information that a person would regret later.

It wasn't that they were spoiled brats who couldn't do anything on their own (even though some of them were), it was just the fact that they showed no development or change at all. The Little Book of Bereavement for Schools, born from personal family experience, is finding a home in schools across the world, and The Working Class - a massive collaborative effort he instigated and edited - is making a genuine difference to the lives of young people from some of the poorest backgrounds. School Library Journal 'The science is both sharp and accessible here, and readers will get a sense of the nuances and messiness of genetic alterations while staying in Aislyn's world.

this fast-paced and edgy novel has enough thrills, romance, and family drama to please a wide audience. Some people want to appear warm in business and it’s absolutely possible to be charismatic in that state. But suddenly, so are lots of other people … Then the doctor behind the miracle drug disappears and people’s behaviour starts spiralling out of control. And even her putting it back, that doesn't show her strength, heck yeah it was good judgement to not take the drug-but how did you even think about it? Especially when society is pushing us into these traps by encouraging distraction and being in a state of constant partial attention?

In The Charisma Machine, Morgan Ames chronicles the life and legacy of the One Laptop per Child project and explains why—despite its failures—the same utopian visions that inspired OLPC still motivate other projects trying to use technology to “disrupt” education and development. Ever since devouring Vance Packard’s The Hidden Persuaders as a child, I have been drawn to books that investigate what makes us tick. Kids play video games, trespass into abandoned homes, chat in the school cafeteria, but the universe disintegrates slowly, leeches crawling underneath skin, every moment pierced by a knife.

Whilst not as compelling to read as Nerve was, I really enjoyed pondering over the ethical and moral questions this raised. But this pales in comparison when she thinks of her brother, Sammy's, everyday struggle of living with severe cystic fibrosis.
