This medium is opaque, so can't be applied over the top of existing work to give it a crackled appearance. This two-stage format offers endless controllability and adaptability not previously possible with single-pack crackle mediums.

Gerstaecker Crackle Paste is a ready-to-use, fine, white, highly absorbent acrylic paste for crackle effects. Crackle Paste is a thick, opaque cracking material designed to develop deep fissure-like cracks as it cures. Dries to an opaque, matte finish, with an absorbent surface suitable for acrylic paints and mediums. Be sure to apply an even undercoat of glossy acrylic to the wood and let it dry, before applying the crackle paste.

Watercolour isn’t really ideal for crackle paste as the paper that you’re using wouldn’t be strong enough to hold the thick paste. Apply the crackle paste to a rigid surface using a palette knife and leave it to dry for at least 24 hours. Don't dilute this acrylic medium with water or try to speed up the drying time as this may result in less or no cracking. If you’re wanting to create a larger crackle effect, then apply a thin layer of PVA glue to your surface and wait at least 20-30 minutes before applying the crackle. Crackle Paste can be easily tinted with GOLDEN Heavy Body, Matte, High Load and Fluid Acrylic Paints. Liquitex Crackle Paste can be used alone or mixed with acrylic colours to create a crackle texture on rigid painting surfaces. the best results are achieved at temperatures around 18-25° C, with the drying process taking several hours.

The base/primer can be pigmented by adding acrylic paints, acrylic ink or resin pigments (no more than 20% addition by weight).
