About this deal

This can negatively affect social interaction and isn’t particularly safe for people with auditory sensitivities if you wear them throughout the day. This is why we recommend that serious musicians or regular concert-goers invest in custom earplugs—they provide an all-around better experience. Some came with silicone tips that were too small for most of the panelists, while others had foam tips that slowly expanded and pushed the earplugs out of our ears.

Earplug manufacturers Blox have the market covered when it comes to providing a range of low-cost earplugs for different functionalities.

The Vibes earplugs promise to “lower volume to more comfortable levels, while still allowing you to hear your environment with clarity. I didn’t have a chance to try the Loop Experience at a concert – they’re sensory overload minefields for me – but I can imagine these would be firm winners for festivals and gigs. And rather than being overtly marketed at people with auditory sensitivities, these come recommended because you can easily change the level of attenuation depending on your environment.

This pair conforms to fit the toughest ear shapes, and it offers more noise protection with a slightly clearer sound than many of the universal earplugs we tested. On the one hand we appreciated this, as it didn’t make our set of keys huge, but on the other hand it was a little fidgety to take them out and put back in again. The earplugs are barely visible due to their translucent silicone design and due to the fact Bollsen first began making earplugs for sleeping - they have been designed so it's possible to hear "human voice" through its filters - so you can still chat to your mates on the dancefloor. Replotting on a logarithmic frequency axis would be standard and would make it clear that the claimed attenuation is highest for 2-8kHz. Davies tells me these earplugs are examples of passive acoustic filter design – passive means there's no active electronics on board. Plus, they can last many years, as long as you keep them clean, don’t lose them, and don’t gain or drop a significant amount of weight.
