About this deal

The kind of place you get an instinct for finding if you grow up a certain way, the way that teaches you how to hide. On top of her hunt for Utopia, she juggles the new friction with her friend David who believes she’s his chance for a date, her abusive father’s mounting pressure to “fix” her body, and the reaction from Legion Pacifica when they learn the new Dreadnought is a trans girl. Danielle teams up with vigilante heroine Calamity to track down the previous Dreadnought’s murderer, only to stumble upon a plan to destroy the human race. Unfortunately, her parents would rather “cure” her and turn her back into Danny, and her reception among the other heroes is mixed at best. Between her father’s dangerous obsession with “curing” her girlhood, her best friend suddenly acting like he’s entitled to date her, and her fellow superheroes arguing over her place in their ranks, Danny feels like she’s in over her head.

No, I’m sorry, if one day one of my male friend turns up in a female body, I would have a bit more questions, like “what happened to you dude? Until Dreadnought fell out of the sky and died right in front of her, Danny was trying to keep people from finding out she's transgender. On the other hand, given the sheer number of positive reviews out there, I do think that it’s important to address some of the problematic aspects of the story. Unfortunately, Dreadnought’s beyond saving, but in his last moments, he passes the mantle of Dreadnaught onto Danielle.Guilt and elation jostle for prime position in her head as she deals with getting her dream body and massive power she can't yet control. This is a page-turning adventure that also explores identity and acceptance in a poignant, lovely way. I get to my feet and peek around the wall, and there across the road, a black and red cloud is blooming from the top floors of an office tower. Let’s just say that Danny pulls a Tony Stark in Iron Man, and it’s more of a Crowning Moment of Awesome than anything else she does in this entire book—and that includes saving an airplane single-handedly or, you know, saving the whole world from a cyborg supervillain with delusions of godhead. She doesn’t have any hobbies: she saves people because she’s able to do so but doesn’t have any particular characteristics. The first little bits of hair are pushing their way up from my face, and my voice dropped so early it's almost a lost cause. He grinds his teeth against the pain, but when I've finally got him all the way into the deep shadows he seems to relax a bit. Keep in mind that Dreadnought is less than 300 pages—there is a lot of character development going on here for a slim book! And Daniels makes it clear that even though Danny lucked out and side-stepped the whole transition quandary and now also has superpowers, none of this solves the institutional transphobia of our society.

As she tries to master her powers and explain to her friends and her parents how and why she has suddenly become the female she always knew she was inside, Danny gets pulled in many different directions by those who wish to influence her decisions. VERDICT This first title in the series offers a rich, unusual mix of subjects and themes for fantasy fans.Dreadnought, arguably the world’s most powerful superhero—superheroes are just a thing in this universe—dies in front of her, and she inherits his “mantle” of powers. Also, in this book Danny makes countless remarks on how much she feels more emotional since being a girl and how she is so much irritable now. I'm hoping for possibly more side queer characters going into the next book that have a more central role in Danny's life, but ultimately I loved the collection of characters we got in this book so I am still super pleased. The character who comes closest to nuance is Danny’s mom, who says that she doesn’t want Danny to be transgender because she worries about what horrible things might happen to Danny.

We welcome respectful dialogue related to speculative fiction in literature, games, film, and the wider world.

Her only friend, David, makes a sexual proposition after Danny’s transformation and, when Danny turns him down, David responds by saying that he hopes that Danny will get raped. The million copy bestseller, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and. But then in health class when the teacher starts talking about reproductive systems, I get this feeling of cold invasion.
