About this deal

He also produced advertising material for Johnnie Walker whisky, and illustrations for both Punch and The Radio Times, [4] including the 1937 and 1948 Christmas covers of the latter. But from the age of twenty there is clearer evidence for a sea-faring occupation since Wallis is listed as crew-member with the Belle Adventure, one of the many great sailing ships – schooners and brigantines – which carried global trade between 1820-1890 from UK ports to Europe and the United States. At the onset of the communist coup in 1948, aged 32, Sasek left Prague for Munich, where from 1951-57 he worked for Radio Free Europe.

The Royal Air Force's (RAF) bombing offensive against Nazi Germany was one of the longest, most expensive and controversial of the Allied campaigns during the Second World War.I had seen nothing more vital and essentially ‘modern’ in the best sense of the word than the reproductions in this book…(1). For Tim All Alone (Oxford, 1956), which he wrote and illustrated, Ardizzone won the inaugural Kate Greenaway Medal from the Library Association for the year's best children's book illustration by a British subject. Privately he continued to paint, mainly with oils, and to study the works of the great masters, Cézanne, Matisse and Picasso in particular. He encountered Surrealism, and after moving back to England became a founding member of the British Surrealist Group.

Ardizzone's drawings and lithographs frequently dealt with the maritime themes of harbour scenes and shipmen at work in the docks, and his own series of books on the adventures of the young 'Tim' involved their own troubled voyages at sea.Rupert Shephard Rupert Norman Shephard (1909-1992) was one of the last of the group of gifted artist-teachers to emerge from the Slade in the 1920s; his contemporaries included William Coldstream, Rodrigo Moynihan, Claude Rodgers, Victor Pasmore and Carel Weight. During the 1930s he was best known for his illustrations in the Radio Times and in children’s books, so was perhaps a surprising choice as official war artist. The meticulous draftmanship insisted on by Tonks stood his pupils in good stead, and two of Shephard’s contemporaries, Coldstream and Rodgers, with whom he shared more than one group-show, founded the Euston Road School of Drawing and Painting in 1937.

He travelled on through Italy with the Eighth Army until April 1944, when he flew to Algiers, from where he sailed back to Britain. The area of Maida Vale in London was also very familiar to the artist, as the Ardizzone family had lived there since 1920. Edward Jeffrey Irving Ardizzone, (16 October 1900 – 8 November 1979), who sometimes signed his work " DIZ", was a British painter, printmaker and war artist, and the author and illustrator of books, many of them for children. His legacy persists through the many publications that remain in print bearing his compassionate imagery.

Tonk’s teaching bred a formidable tenacity in his students, and a diversity of approach which was apparent throughout Shephard’s career. Keith Vaughan Keith Vaughan was born at Selsey, Sussex (1912) to Eric George Story Vaughan, a civil engineer, and his wife Gladys Regina Marian Mackintosh. Brian Alderson, 'Edward Ardizzone: a preliminary hand-list of his illustrated books, 1929–1970', in The Private Library; 2nd series, 5:1 (1972 Spring), pp. In 1943 they devoted an entire wall to Ardizzone’s pictures, including many from his time in North Africa.By this time, the WAAC had collected almost 400 of his works, a number exceeded by only one other artist, Anthony Gross. The year 1929 also saw Ardizzone's marriage, the birth of his first child, and (a little under a year later) his first one-man show at the Bloomsbury Gallery, followed by several at the Leger Gallery over the next few years. The Committee’s minutes of the following month note that arrangements had been made for him to paint ‘coming events’.
