About this deal

This lands most of the time, though occasionally I wanted to reach through the page and tell Winston (and by extension, my baby queer self) to just cut herself some slack. I found Jen Winston's forthcoming memoir so resonant that I eventually had to stop underlining it because the book was looking ridiculous. Jen's provocative, laugh-out-loud debut takes us inside her journey of self-discovery, leading us through stories of a childhood 'girl crush," an onerous quest to have a threesome, and an enduring fear of being bad at sex.

I'm all for discussions of representation in media, especially within the lesbian community, but the context and wording of this part made me a TINY bit livid. Thank you to the author for sharing their experiences while also being mindful and aware of their privileges. By this point I knew for certain that I needed to label my sexuality—if I didn't explicitly name my queerness, it seemed too slippery, like a bar of soap that would fly out of my hands.Given his appearance in subsequent tales I'm guessing Mr Greedy becomes a yo-yo dieter, a la Oprah Winfrey. So much time and many pages wasted to show that she was a Good White Woman Ally who ~gets it~, so icky to read.

I heard Jen doing an interview about the book on my way to work and instantly wanted to read this book. on the VERY next page jen says that there are "so many ways to be gay" as if she didn't just directly invalidate a way to be gay. Greedy brought out her in the style drop which came and went with really not much interest from, well anyone. Perfect for fans of Lindy West, Samantha Irby, and Rebecca Solnit—and anyone who wants, and deserves, to be seen. This book inspires us to rethink the world as we know it, reminding us that Greedy was a superpower all along.

I felt conflicted by the nature of the virtue signaling throughout the book, especially since most of the information on Black and brown queer and trans authors was relegated to footnotes, or squeezed in between forced humor. The book is chalk-full of pop culture references–from her frequent use of textspeak to imagining how the characters from Sex and the City would have voted in the 2020 election–and she cites many of her references by their Instagram or Twitter handles. Greedy follows Jen’s attempts to make sense of herself as she explores the role of the male gaze, what it means to be “queer enough,” and how to overcome bi stereotypes when you’re the posterchild for all of greedy, slutty, and constantly confused. A memoir in essays structured around the author's bisexuality and embracing rather than shamefully rejecting the stereotypes of being greedy, confused, slutty and indecisive. She recently went on holiday on her sisters hen do and proceeded to have a drunken rant as to why H wasn't there and tried to make a joke about how she is just the babysitter. The only problem is that his eyes are bigger than he's belly and that got him into a whole load of trouble! I do find the pastor who condemns alcohol in all its forms but lays out a sumptuous feast to be somewhat hypocritical – in a way it is easy to condemn alcohol because of the nature of drunkenness, but food not to the same extent – we all need to eat. Yet, what is a shame is that these days greed isn't portrayed in the same way that it used to be portrayed, particularly in this book. Many firms with decent directors are often too big for top management to supervise effectively what is happening at street level.
