About this deal

The "Heinemann Plays" series offers contemporary drama and classic plays in durable classroom editions. Warning: if you are looking for tales of heroism, sound battle strategies and the underlying theme of how sweet and noble it is to die for one's country, then this is not the book for you. Sherriff presents to the audience the cyclical nature of life during war and highlights the psychological process that soldiers experience when they feel there is little they can do to influence their lives. A newspaper photograph of Derek Williams and Colin Keith-Johnston, two of the actors, is laid in on the copyright page (leaving a ghost on the character list page). The classic sense of commanders being out of touch and inhumane appears during the penultimate raid sequence.

Journey's End is considered a classic of First World War literature now, but at the time, it was rejected by almost every producer in the West End (‘How can I put on a play with no leading lady?A new, young officer, Raleigh, has been placed in Company C, run by Stanhope, who Raleigh just happens to know. C. Sherriff's "Journey's End" is an unflinching vision of life in the trenches towards the end of the First World War, published in "Penguin Classics". The trenches are dirty, smelly, ratty, but they manage to take tea, eat bacon, drink (a lot) and just converse like ordinary fellows gathered together down at the local pub. Shaw replied that, like other sketches of trench life, it was a "useful [corrective] to the romantic conception of war", and that "As a 'slice of life' – horribly abnormal life – I should say let it be performed by all means".

Lost from the BBC archives for over 40 years, these rediscovered episodes are presented on CD for the very first time.Though relatively limited in both length and layout, Journey's End remains a profound and thought-provoking portrayal of the psychological strain and mind-numbing monotony of the First World War. There were some moments of banter and dark humor between the men which I think made this play seem even more real.

We add mylar covers to all books with DJs to preserve the DJs and add luster to magnify their beauty. Whale travelled to the United States to direct the Broadway production in 1930 at Henry Miller's Theatre.

If we add to this the overzealous use of mustard gas then a picture reminiscent of a living hell is an apt description. At the start of world war 1 there appeared to be no shortage of young men following the advice from Lord Kitchener. To the young men who flew over Germany night after night there were other much more pressing worries: the V2 rockets that threatened their loved ones at home; the brand new German jet fighters that could strike them at speeds of over 600mph. He highlights the varied operating environments across the region from city operations in Cambridge and Peterborough through rural areas of Suffolk, coastal resorts, urban centres in Ipswich and Norwich and smaller towns such as Kings Lynn.
