The Kill Team Compendium is not only expensive, but is also bereft of unique rules for a huge number of models. Honestly, with the small scale of the game and lack of ranges for weapons it is much easier using these in a game rather than a tape measure! As a massive fan of the Death Korps of Krieg, I couldn’t wait to get these guys built and painting as soon as possible and I have to say they are absolutely outstanding models. Page layouts are nice and clear; punky, orange-white-black original artworks add Kill Team personality, without plastering every page; and cover pages for each section have a pleasantly sharp orange overlay, contrasting the colourful art behind. My favourite part has to be the narrative content, it really feels like GW have captured the essence of the 40k universe and distilled it into a narrative system that captures the feeling of stories that we have read about crack teams of operatives in do or die operations.It’s little things like this that just make the game all the more enjoyable, as it saves on set-up and pack-down time, and helps keep things organised on the tabletop. When I reviewed the Pariah Nexus expansion, because Bosshammer is a nice bloke and a pleasure to work for, he picked me up a copy of the old Core Book. There’s an awful lot of boxes ready to go, of course, but given the global interest in this incredible set, it may not be enough. The designs are absolutely bonkers; they’re a thoughtfully crafted blend of highly detailed and hilarious.

GW isn’t going to throw open the factory gates and flood us with a whole tide of releases with all the new rules for all the Kill Team factions all at once. Once you’ve browsed the list, you may think “Damn, I love the sound of Heavy Intercessors; they big ol’ boots’d be able to stomp the brains out of some smug Tau. Again while we get a list in the book I imagine we will see more warzone or army specific ones added in the future. In this Kill Team Octarius review we will be looking at the contents of the set, checking out the new plastic Kommandos and Death Korps of Krieg along with the Ork Scenery, and having a dive into the new rules system and sharing our thoughts on it compared to previous editions.

And, since no faction’s Kill Team can consist of more than two Fireteams, this means quite a few of the currently available Kill Team configurations can simply only have one or two types of miniatures in them. All in all, though, these are some seriously impressive miniatures: oozing with character and rife with detail, they have broken into my all-time favourites list. The rules themselves are mostly easy to grasp, and well laid out, though afflicted at times with the over-worded, competitive-balance-minded legalese of all modern GW rules.
