About this deal

That scene not only made me hate the protagonist instantly and made me indifferent to the many challenges he has to overcome, but it was a warning sign that I should’ve just closed the book there. The action is, I suppose necessarily, comic booky, which suits this medium, but wouldn't work at all in a novel. Throughout the story Tezuka continually teases his reader with the idea that faith in humanity can be rewarded, and evil can ultimately be conquered.

However, as another sign his renewed confidence as a storyteller, and unlike most of his “Dark Period” works – they’re there. Since the two are on the opposite sides of his career, I can say that he has improved immensely as an artist with a profound influence from Gekiga. Unlike many different designs, the design isn't dependent upon the upon the hair nor clothes, but rather the face of the person.I struggled with the last 200 pages but I got there in the end and that says something – this book, while dislikeable on so many levels, is readable and that’s thanks to Tezuka’s prowess with the comics medium.

Adolf, unlike Maus, focuses more on the mental state of one particular SS officer rather then the Jews themselves and what they go through. A year later, Japan invades China and begins the Second Sino-Japanese War, ushering in a period of fevered militarism and nationalism in Japan. Meanwhile in Japan, a half-German, half-Japanese boy named Adolf Kauffmann and his best friend, a Jewish boy named Adolf Kamil, were accidently involved in this incident. Chapter Serial: a series of episodes, published over a span of weeks/months/years where the story plot is self-contained to a single chapter. In fact, the very existence of the Nazis in this story feels like apologetics, a way to prove that Japan wasn't bad because "Japan weren't the Nazis" -- almost as though the Japanese were victims of Axis necessity rather than active agents in their WW2 fate.
