About this deal

However, from the looks of it, it appears that they used the same master created for the 4K transfer above and simply re-edited the previously deleted scenes back into the film. Compression is very well done across all the films, with bitrates averaging in the mid-80s mpbs consistently across all the films, with no visual anomalies or issues resulting. and while there are some minor fluctuations in terms of volume and tone across their run time, both are fine listens. NEW Pre-Production Sales Featurette (HD, 7 min) is a featurette originally produced by Golden Harvest in 1976, but the audio has been lost. A quick glance at the internet out there will show copious comparisons between previous releases and colour gradings that I can’t add anything to unfortunately.

After a short while, the cousins and their fellow workers worry about the disappearance of some of their group. However, there are a few scenes where the limited clarity of the source makes the video look pretty poor. It would have been nice to maybe try to get the theatrical Green Hornet movie in there as well, but that was a different company of course (and that one was a “Brucesploitation” movie released after the star’s death). In contrast, the English track emphasizes the dialogue, making everything else sound somewhat flatter and giving the movie that comical stereotype of 1970s martial art flicks.

His seething ball of barely contained rage sees him permanently straddle the fine line between cocksure swagger and supreme mastery of his skills as he single handedly sets out to dismantle the Japanese dojo and the people he believes are responsible for the death of his master. Whilst that series never got off the ground, the screen test for that led to him being cast as Kato in the Green Hornet series. The Mandarin track is similar to those above with a great, well-balanced soundstage and strong definition in the mid-range while dialogue is clean and distinct in the center.

Not to be outdone by the tidal wave of 'Bruceploitation' films that followed, Golden Harvest completed two posthumous films using unreleased footage, 1978's Game of Death and its 1981 sequel, as well as two official documentaries, the first of which hit cinemas only three months after Lee’s death. Although fixed to the center of the screen, imaging comes with a great sense of presence and balance, exhibiting clean definition and fidelity in the music while the action maintains excellent distinction and clarity in the upper frequencies. At the end of the day, however, none of that matters because fans are here to watch the actual footage of Lee ascending the pagoda and go one-on-one with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.He ended up in a bidding war between the well-established studio Shaw Brothers and upstart competitor Golden Harvest. Along with a double-sided poster for The Big Boss and The Way of the Dragon, there is an assortment of ten glossy, black-and-white photos of Lee in iconic poses and twenty-four lobby-style postcards for all four films. The revenge flick mostly follows Lo's younger brother Bobby (Tong Lung) trying to avenge his older brother's death, and as good as Lung is in the role, especially in the fight sequences, the character's sleuthing skills are laughably bad, mostly stumbling from one ridiculous clue or lead to another and chatting with hilariously dubious characters that don't actually contribute anything to the plot.

This is evident in the incredible package Arrow Video have just released, Bruce Lee at Golden Harvest, which is being released in ten-disc UHD/Blu-ray and ten-disc Blu-ray sets. The Big Boss, Fist of Fury, The Way of the Dragon, Enter the Dragon and the two more famous “Brucesploitation” films featuring footage of Lee Game of Death and Game of Death II are all included, the movies that Lee made after becoming somewhat famous in the US in his role as Kato in The Green Hornet on TV. However taken on its own and my own hazy memories of half watched TV and VHS showings in my youth, this set presents some truly exceptional restoration work on some very sub-optimal source material.Sure, there’s still a lot of stuff out there on Lee – some of which is notably on Criterion’s recent boxset – which again, likely rights issues preclude their being here, but the combination of the archive supplementals that have been sourced and the staggeringly good new features included here really should satisfy all but the most ravenous of Lee fans. NEW The Not-Quite-Biggest Boss (HD, 8 min) is a video essay by Bentley discussing some of the sadly lost footage, including the infamous "saw-in-the-head" kill.

Scoring this set is tricky - arguably the film's aren't perfect, neither are some of the transfers due to source limitations, and of course there is a separate 4K arrival for Enter the Dragon due anytime now.
