About this deal

Ingri and Edgar Parin d'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths, published by Doubleday in 1962, was an elaborately illustrated compendium of Greek mythology, 192 pages in 46 chapters. Before I gift this to some young relatives of mine, I intend to prepare a pronunciation guide in LaTeX (or LyX) and tape it into the endpapers.

Highly recommended not only for children, but for anyone who loves well-drawn and well-narrated folklore. I can't remember if I was the one who suggested Greek Mythology or if it was she, but I do remember her aiding me at the card catalogues, then she sent me off to the shelves to track down "292 DAU [JUV]. I know that she gets white-washed in every painting ever, so the d'Aulaires' were probably just following in that tradition, but come ooooooon. Rereading as an adult, I was struck by the absence of the story of Antigone, an odd choice given that the D'Aulaires do devote some space to Oedipus's warring sons. His parents separated when Parin was six years old and he grew up spending time with each, travelling around Europe with his father.I devoured D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths in what was then record time, and within days I was debating my father on theology.

When I was a kid, I used to take this book out of the library over and over and I would read it when I was at a friend's house and they had a copy. When she was 15, the Norwegian painter Harriet Backer encouraged her to pursue art as a career, and Ingri later studied at art schools in Norway, Germany and France.Edgar concentrated on illustrating books using wood block engravings and stone lithography; Ingri garnered commissions to paint portraits of prominent businessmen. It has inspired a lifelong fascination with mythology and the ancient world and probably played a large part in my obsessive need to learn everything about everything--not that that's possibly, but it's fun to try. This volume was carefully printed to reproduce the vibrant color and texture of the original lithographs, and includes a glowing foreword by Michael Chabon. I checked it out several times--though it's an oversize book and was therefore as a hardcover a bit heavy to drag home and back, I always felt it was worth it. No more than Mother Goose, but they formed the imagination and are part of our Western understanding of who we are.

I -- Io: I liked her punishment from Hera, being turned into a cow, but I don't think it is fair for just having been with Zeus. Awarded the 1940 Caldecott Medal for their picture-book biography of Abraham Lincoln, the d'Aulaires published other children's biographies, as well as some notable works on Greek and Norse mythology. I don't know how many times I've read it, but every single story and illustration felt intimately familiar when I opened it now, 20 years later. Yunan mitolojisinde ölümlüler Tanrılara nasıl tapıyorsa Tanrılarda Toprak Ana'ya öyle saygı gösteriyorlardı çünkü Toprak Ana bütün hayatın kaynağıydı. After studying architecture for a year in Munich, he began art studies at its School of Arts and Crafts (German: Kunstgewerbeschule). We encourage them to think for themselves, to question, to seek, to demand that authority earns respect, so their experience with the book isn't as revelatory as mine. I am an absolute fan of Greek myths for I read this book ten years ago in paperback format and it has stuck with me ever since. Thorough, almost every Greek god and major or minor myth is represented here, with the Trojan War and all that followed being the only part of the traditions to receive a somewhat perfunctory treatment- no doubt due to their unquestionably adult themes. D -- Dionysus: He is a cool god; I like how he is the god of wine, and I like how he doesn't want to hurt the pirates who attack him, and how he not only makes wine, but grows vines of grapes to make wine.

The d'Aulaires won the third annual Caldecott Medal in 1940 for Abraham Lincoln, a picture-book life of the 16th U.derinlemesine bir inceleme beklemeyin dediğim gibi sadeleştirilmiş bir baskı bu ama daha önce hiç okumadıysanız ve ilginizi çekiyorsa keyif alacağınızı düşünüyorum. A modest insurance settlement following a near-fatal bus–trolley collision in Paris provided the seed money for Edgar's steerage-class voyage to the U.
