About this deal

A few months ago we had a Dalwhinnie event at our local whisky club, going over the full official line up of the distillery, giving me a perfect opportunity to check out again the Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old after not tasting it for a while. To the snobs who like the taste of parrafin, some drams are perfectly lovely because they taste nice, like this one. Then again, this whisky has been distilled at 326 metres above sea level at Scotland only during winter time: it will have an affect on the flavors during the condensing stage of production. Made using whisky distilled in the cold Scottish winter, it is intended to be served from the freezer, delivering richness and sweetness as the glass warms up.

This Highland single malt is produced from Scotland`s highest and coldest distillery and is recommended to be served straight from the freezer. Dalwhinnie suggests you serve this dram straight from the freezer, in a chilled glass, just like Snow Grouse by the Famous Grouse brand. That is why it’s one of the highest distilleries in Scotland, having some marine quality in its whiskies. Even after all those years it’s still an enjoyable spring/summer whisky with that light and fresh profile.Though labelled as a Highland whisky, Dalwhinnie is actually a Speysider that’s recognised for its well-balanced character of honey, malt and dried fruits. There’s the tart taste of slightly unripe pear and a dash of lime, giving way to a more earthy profile that’s sweetened by a few drops of honey.

Although I doubt whether the impact on the flavour really is noticeable, there’s no denying that Winter’s Gold is beautifully marketed by Diageo. Browse what Dalwhinne has to offer at House of Malt, including the limited releases of their Distillers Editions . An interesting experiment and I already have the feeling that Winter's Gold is actually optimally matched to the cooling, because then the smell and taste impressions are better balanced. Inspired by the brisk and remote Scottish climate where the single malt is crafted, this expression aptly named "Crafted by the Cold" is distilled solely from October to March. An ever-present fragrant and smooth waxiness underscores higher glimpses of fruit, suggesting a caramel tart on a smear of sharp apricot coulis, or sweet shortcrust pastry offset by orange zest.

They mention that it is a great night cap, ideal as an after dinner liqueur, and a lovely drink to share with your closest friend. And at first it is, as expected, just cold, but as it warms the palate, a pleasant sweetness, marzipan and nuts develop from hazelnut and almond to fresh cashews.

It is best served straight from the freezer so it can develop its full-bodied flavour while the glass warms up.A marriage of two first fill bourbon barrels of 11 year old Longmorn, yielding in an outturn of just 458 bottles.
