About this deal

And Sophie is left to repair both the memory of this once-happy family as well as discerning the particulars of her best friend's death, alone. Zoella Book Club pick Frozen Charlotte is a creepy and suspenseful horror story based in an old boarding school on the Isle of Skye. She does this by only giving away certain hints at specific points, as well as, only appearing at times that the plot needs developing. I enjoyed the odd red herring thrown at me at the outset but I also enjoyed that the villain of the piece became obvious early enough on for me to watch and anticipate what they would do next and how they would end up.

We have published a new cookies policy, which you should read to find out more about the cookies we use.I have found that modern technology often ruins much of the suspension of belief that the reader contributes to a historical horror, and a younger character set can often be synonymous with tame horror. Throughout the month of ‘Spooktober’ I’m reviewing creepy reads, so make sure the check out the rest of my posts. After Sophie’s best friend dies in a tragic accident, she travels to the isle of Skye in Scotland to visit her relatives, who live there in an old, possibly haunted mansion. I think if I'd read this before the age of like, fifteen or so, it would've been a 5-star read, as my taste and expectations weren't quite as developed then as they are now.

She believes that Lilias is right to be afraid, as the attacks seem to originate with the tiny dolls, which appear to have moved whenever she looks at them. Sophie is the main character of the book and the tragedy that strikes her friend Jay after messing around with a Ouija board app is what spurs her onto finding the ghost of her dead cousin. To me, the use of social media made this paranormal story seem much more realistic and therefore scarier.Needless to say I absolutely loved it and read the whole thing from cover to cover in one sitting (no, not just because I was too scared to move). Jackson’s debut is well-executed and surprises readers with a connective web of interesting characters and motives.

The original investigation concluded with most of the evidence pointing to Sal, who was found dead in the woods, apparently by suicide. There are plenty of odd things going on in the Craig household, but a large number of them revolve around the strange behaviour of the family themselves, and the secrets they are each keeping. I decided to read maybe just the first few pages to get a feel for the writing and atmosphere of the book but reading the ‘first few pages’ was a huge understatement.I could almost imagine this book being played out as a movie, one with a lot of silence and creep-up-on-you scenes. His adoptive dads and cousin are the only ones who support him; everyone else, including the sheriff, thinks he’s responsible for Lola’s disappearance. In much the same way of traditional Gothic texts, that I so adore, the 'haunted mansion' setting fills this book with shadowed corners and creaking stairs that both heighten the actual horrors contained there and provide additional fears, real and imaged, for the reader to obsess over.
