About this deal
A quiet man who worked at the Monument Comb factory, he was always affectionate towards Francis but moved back to Canada during the war. On his way to accomplishing those two missions, he goes through memories and meets some of his childhood friends.
At the bar, the other veterans talk eagerly of their future plans now that the war is over, but never of their experiences overseas. However, something I would point out is that some people seemed to have misinterpreted the narratives of the three different time periods. The novel explores the effects of Pearl Harbor on Frenchtown, as the Wreck Centre closes because of Larry's absence. Only later in life, when my journey had come full circle and I realized I was meant to become what I enjoyed the most, a storyteller, did it occur to me how much of an impact Robert Cormier had had on me. As Francis helps him, Arthur begins to pour out his emotions, lamenting that nobody wants to talk about the horrible truth of what happened during the war, and exclaiming that the war wasn’t a stage for glamorous, heroic soldiers, but merely a group of terrified children caught up in a violent struggle for survival. As I mentioned above, when I first read this novella, I was expecting great things, and ultimately didn't think that I received them.
Larry is surprised to learn that Francis knew about what he did to Nicole and shows no remorse about what happened between them. Although no doubt a brave act but in doing so he also saves his own life and as such could be equally regarded as a simple act of self-preservation.Some critics have suggested that the character of Francis Cassavant is based on the author Robert Cormier.
