About this deal

If you are reading this review and are already bored with the numbers, we apologise in advance. Because this drive is all about the numbers, the good, bad and ugly. IronWolf Health Management in compatible NAS1 systems continuously helps to safeguard the health of your data However, for the sake of fairness, I needed to find out if this was the new drive or just something that had been there and I had suddenly become aware of for some reason. I altered the power management option in Windows to turn off the new drive after 10 minutes. I waited and then I knew it was the new drive when the hum faded into blissful silence. CrystalDiskMark: 286.8MBps (read); 279.3MBps (write) Atto: 277.89MBps (read, 256MB); 274.68MBps (write, 256MB)

There is one aspect to the IronWolf Pro 20TB that concerns us, and it’s the 300TB per year workload definition. One of the standout features for me is the CMR (Conventional Magnetic Recording) technology. This ensures consistent, reliable performance even under heavy workloads, making it ideal for demanding environments. I've experienced no drop in speed or reliability, even during simultaneous, high-bandwidth access from multiple devices. The previous 18TB IronWolf Pro could read and write sequentially at about 260MB/s, and the 20TB achieved more than 285MB/s in most tests. That’s nearly a 10% improvement, almost the same margin as the increase in capacity. RAID performance optimised that maximises responsiveness and uptime with NAS-aware Error Recovery Control But, the WD Red Pro 20TB that’s in direct competition with the Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB is much cheaper, at least at the MSRP level.

The veracity of massive capacity

What we see here is the reality of technology with moving parts, where each operation the drive performs contributes to its ultimate failure, much like the playing of a vinyl record. Great File Sharing Performance (5/5): These drives excel in file sharing performance across my network, providing fast and consistent access to data.

It comes with 256MB of cache, a five-year warranty and three years of Rescue Data Recovery Services. MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) is 1.2 million hours, and the yearly workload is 300TB. When we first saw these numbers, they sounded reasonable because the workload value isn’t like a TBW number on an SSD, as the 300TB is for each year of operation up to five years. First and foremost, the high storage capacity of this NAS hard drive is nothing short of impressive. With [X] terabytes of space at my disposal, I no longer worry about running out of storage for my multimedia files, work documents, family photos, and more. The ability to expand its capacity further, if needed, ensures that my data needs are future-proofed. Seagate brought its 20TB products to market alongside Western Digital, eliminating any special bragging rights on this scale of drive.Alongside its IronWolf Pro, Seagate also makes a 20TB EXOS design that we’ll be covering shortly, aimed at the same slice of the Enterprise market that the UltraStar DC HC560 was created. Quiet Operation (5/5): Despite their powerful performance, these drives operate quietly, ensuring a pleasant environment in my home server setup. Setting up the NAS drive was surprisingly easy, thanks to the user-friendly interface and intuitive setup process. Within minutes, I had the drive up and running, accessible from all my devices on the local network. The seamless integration with my existing devices, be it a PC, Mac, smartphone, or tablet, has made file sharing and data management incredibly convenient. Tiene un diseño específico para funcionar en sistemas NAS que permite trabajar las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana, lo que lo hace adecuado para entornos de almacenamiento en red que necesitan operar de manera continua.

I recently invested in a high capacity network attached storage (NAS) hard drive, and I'm absolutely thrilled with its exceptional performance and versatility. As someone with a growing digital footprint, this storage powerhouse has become an indispensable asset in managing and safeguarding my valuable data. Installation was a breeze, thanks to the SATA 6Gb/s interface, and the drive runs cool and quiet, even during extended usage periods. It's clear that Seagate has put serious thought into both the performance and longevity of this drive. Apologies for the preamble on this review of the Seagate IronWolf 8Tb drive, I just wanted to help those perhaps unaware of the potential pitfalls of choosing a drive. Reliable Storage (5/5): The Seagate IronWolf drives have consistently delivered reliability and peace of mind for my data storage needs. This change of mind return policy is in addition to, and does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law including any rights you may have in respect of faulty items. This design is exclusively a SATA 6GB/s connected drive, and can be used in any PC or NAS that accepts SATA drives of that spec. I set about copying some 1.5Tb of data from my old drive to the new one which took almost 5 hours. I noticed though, how the NAS's internal fan would regularly ramp up to keep the unit cool now it had a warmer running 7,200 rpm drive sat in the bottom bay. This turned my otherwise silent NAS, an unobtrusive box sat in one corner, into a presence that reminded me of a distant hair drier. I shudder to think had I had all five bays populated with these drives, my NAS may have trouble with the heat under sustained load. If it did, it's 120mm rear fan would be running at max continually to try and stay cool. But working the maths a little, taking 300TB and multiplying that by the five years of warranty yields an operational guaranteed limit of 1500TB. Divide that by the capacity, and the total bytes transferred is only 75TB per TB of capacity. That’s a worse workload than the cheapest unbranded SSD available. But it is even less impressive when you realise that Seagate defines the workload as “Annualized Workload Rate = (Lifetime Writes + Lifetime Reads) * (8760 / Lifetime Power On Hours)” Talking about the outside of the Seagate IronWolf Pro 20TB is mainly irrelevant. Externally, it appears to be identical to every other Seagate IronWolf drive in the 3.5-inch form factor.
