About this deal

And as anyone who has seen any of these films before will know, they were all shot on 35mm and made heavy use of optical work for their SFX and VFX work, as well as very early CG, meaning there was always a degree of fluctuations present in terms of their look – especially their detail and grain levels. Encodes across all four films are solid, with stable bitrates averaging the middle 70’s mbps noted from a few spot checks of the player information throughout. However, being such a fan I have bought the Quartet of Torment set and am quite disappointed to not be able to review the book in it, as the post didn’t deliver it in time, Never mind. The differences between the stereo and surround options are mostly due to the expansion into the speakers, both tracks retaining a very similar audio character – mid-range is healthy, with a decent low end and a crystal clean higher range.

Now his former lover Julia ( Clare Higgins) must kill to make him whole again; but the Cenobites want Frank back, and there’ll be hell to pay when they find him. With enhanced colour grading and meticulous attention to detail, the movie now reveals its true dark and gritty nature as intended by the director.A much more modern take on the Cenobites could have been fascinating and nuggets remain in the sadly recently departed Anthony Hickox’s finished film – the infamous Black Mass scene is brilliantly composed and shot and delivers one of the strongest images of the entire franchise, hinting at a glorious clash of modern intangible belief and faith in the much more tangible flesh; and the notions of modern technology clashing with the ancient powers and creating a bizarre, demonic take on biomechanics are wonderfully and intriguingly queasy…yet sadly nuggets are all they are.

So while those inherent source issues remain however – grain haters will feel their skin crawl and there are real fluctuations in terms of those picture characteristics, which are nothing to do with the quality of the transfers here – and should be made aware to casual viewers, fans of the films and owners of previous discs will be more than pleased with the picture improvements of this new 4K release.Neil became a horror fan from just a nightmare-inducing glimpse of the Ghoulies VHS cover and a book on how to draw ghosts. Those script problems plague the first act of the film, lazy exposition dumps and flashbacks are seemingly used solely to enable the film to resurrect Julia.
