He looks like he is holding the blocks and has been hand painted with festive colours, the entire calendar sports a green and red theme. I did the same for a large pocket at the bottom with a poinsettia piece that was 70cm x 40cm, by hemming the top, turning under the other edges, then stitching it on to the bottom part of the main panel.
