About this deal

At the end of WW2 Churchill was hailed as a hero, but it was not long before the harsh world of politics was condemning him as a war-monger.

In the World War One he was minister of munitions under Lloyd George, then after the war, secretary of state for war. His Victorian attitude to the countries under England's rule in the time of his youth, from India to Ireland, show a nostalgia that neglects the harsh implications of imperialism but his energetic writing style and self deprecating humor make for a great read! The statesman who yields to war fever must realise that once the signal is given, he is no longer the master of policy but the slave of unforeseeable and uncontrollable events.

To be sure, Churchill takes some liberties with facts and perhaps unduly lightens or over-simplifies certain events.Jeg er helt overbevist om at man skal interessere sig for krigshistorier og selvfølgelig Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill for at falde ind under kategorien af læsere. By then the horrific effects of advanced weaponry caused him to take a different view of war and its effects. This was in the days when the military was the trashcan of the scions of British aristocracy, and the cavalry was the trashcan of the military.

In this house there lived a personage styled the Chief Secretary or the Under Secretary, I am not clear which. He managed to attach himself to fighting expeditions in northwest India, Egypt, and the Boer War, in what is now South Africa, all before the turn of the twentieth century.

To travel thousands of miles with money one could ill afford, and get up at four c'clock in the morning in the hope of getting into a scrape in the company of perfect strangers, is certainly hardly a rational proceeding. This remarkably weak foundation never deterred Churchill from his belief that he was a great military strategist, a belief he maintained even in the face of his many poor strategic decisions in WWI (as First Lord of the Admiralty) and in WWII (as Prime Minister). Frontispiece and 8 plates; maps, plans and illustrations to the text including 1 double-page and 6 full-page. My Early Life, also known in the US as A Roving Commission: My Early Life, is a 1930 book by Winston Churchill.
