About this deal

The biggest and most irritating issue I have with 512GW with rear cam is the need to switch off and switch on to cure a fault (this is Nextbase own advice). At the top resolution, video is captured at 27Mbits/sec, so a 16GB memory card will be enough for 77 minutes of footage before the recoding loops to replace the oldest files with new ones.

We’d recommend hard wiring the dash camera since it hides away the wires and leaves the 12V socket free for charging phones. With it attached, the front camera is limited to 1080p recording too, rather than its maximum 1440p.To benefit from these improvements and updates, please check your Dash Cam's firmware and update it if there is an update available. Inside the rear cam box, you'll get the camera, 6m connection cable, spare 3M adhesive pad and a Quick Start Guide. WIFI CONNECTIVITY AND SMARTPHONE APP: The Wi-Fi feature in enables you to download and share video and photo files directly from the dash cam to your phone or tablet. It doesn’t provide the ability to change camera settings, but it does let you get a live view, trigger record and download videos to your smartphone for sharing as well as viewing any videos already downloaded. But the cheaper Nextbase 412GW is a good option, or for more features, the 612GW is top of the range.

In daylight, you should be able to make out number plates and signs with no problems, unless they’re simply too far away. With both units plugged in all the time I believe you do not even get the "where do you want the rear view" question - it assumes you still want it where you last selected it.Built in gps so easy to where you were going (when playing videos from SD card), WiFi so it can be paired with phone and can download videos directly from dash cam. Unfortunately, this has a non-removable car cigarette light adapter at the other end, so you won’t easily be able to hook up the 512GW and a satnav to automotive power – unless your car has a USB connection and the satnav can make use of this. Now NextBase has discontinued the rear camera for the older models, are people using other cameras as a possible solution? Compared to designs from Thinkware and DDPai which hug the windscreen and don’t obstruct the sun visors, the 512GW is hard to hide away behind a rear view mirror – at least in a standard hatchback.

On the front of the 512GW the 6-layer glass lenses are covered by a special anti-glare polarizing filter. Other cables we’ve seen have been significantly thinner, and it’s hard to conclude Nextbase chose this because if offered better quality. The simplicity and quality of both cameras are good, but the thick wire that connects the cameras is a little bit tricky to run around the headlining of the car. Such accuracy can save commercial vehicle owners thousands of pounds in excess and split liability claims. Having a dash cam in your car now makes more sense than ever, with discounts on your insurance and being able to prove an accident wasn’t your fault.

At that point we praised it for offering great quality video and the possibility of adding a rear camera in the future. Introducing Smart Dash Cams with features including Alexa, Emergency SOS Response and what3words, not seen before in any Dash Cams. Please select 'Mass Storage' on the Dash Cam screen and then OK so that only that displays on the screen. This means you can track your journey on Google Maps and pinpoint exactly where an incident has occurred, which can be crucial in an insurance claim.Today, we have millions of users a month from around the world, and assess more than 1,000 products a year. You can turn on a parking mode, where the 512GW will sit in standby mode and record two minutes of video every time it detects physical movement. Also, in a standard hatchback, 6m is way too long, so you’ll have to find somewhere to ‘lose’ around 2m of it. Both cameras record simultaneously in 1080P at 30fps, offering front and rear protection against liability claims in case your car is rear-ended.
