About this deal

The book has some interesting things to say about generational changes and trans identity, but what annoyed me is that it sees itself as somehow edgelord-y, when it's mainly about the protagonist being an anti-feminist idiot - and I don't mean the outward presentation (who am I to comment on that, a woman who owns three pink coats and a concerning amount of shoes and handbags? The Performative Aesthetics are a big part of that, which made this book almost constantly grating for me. Though her own gaze might wander, Sasha comes totally undone whenever her boyfriend isn’t looking at her in a way that makes her feel truly seen — especially if Jesse is looking at someone else, like Darcy, his best friend’s girlfriend. And look, I'm hard to shock with queer books, but implying your trans partner looks like a sex offender not once but TWICE in a book? finally not a boresome “wlw” (fuck that term) book with closeted lesbians having internalised homophobia!

Still, Sasha, Jesse, and their friends live in the same world the rest of us do, in which marrying your partner, joining households and having a kid or two are qualifications for being officially “grown up. You may go into it thinking it’s a silly fun satire about nyc lesbians but in fact it is actually sick, twisted, and perverted. But long-term monogamous partnership, no matter how loving and long-lasting, and no matter how much capitalism wants us reliant on the private family, can’t be expected to fulfill our every need. This deeply smart, original, and funny debut novel has permanently shifted my understanding of the relationship between honesty and performance . What's important here, for me, because I'm sure the queer community is already familiar, is learning so many terms and nuances that go on between relationships. But the struggle of being queer is the general outsiderness one experiences from the rest of the world. Now, in his new book, Network of Lies, Brian Stelter explores the myriad factors contributing to Carlson’s cancellation.

Vanity Fair spoke with Davis about trends in queer fiction, femme studies, and the “spiritual center” of her novel. The Russian figure skater will be stripped of any titles, awards, and prizes earned after her positive sample was collected, including Olympic medals.Even if the trip includes a third couple--Jesse's best friend, Lou, and their cool-girl flame, Darcy--whose It-queer clout Sasha ridicules yet desperately wants. Recently, I started reading Sarah Schulman’s book Let the Record Show, which is all about being queer in the 1980s and confronting AIDS as queer people who were unified in some important ways but who also came from vastly different lived experiences and had really different needs. Performing gender as Sasha does, with her exhaustive lesbian processing, vintage head scarves and hunger to be worshipped as a pretty angel-baby bimbo princess, can be so much fun. At the beginning of the book, Sasha overhears Jesse say some less-than-flattering things about her in a therapy session, right as they are about to join two other queer couples on an upstate getaway. I’m really excited for Homebodies by Tembe Denton-Hurst, and Couplets by my friend Maggie Milner was huge for me also.
