Highways authorities (county, unitary, metropolitan and London borough councils) are responsible for nine out of every 10 miles of road – about 225,000 miles throughout the UK. Many rock salt grits also contain urea derived products that also cause health issues and corrosion in larger quantities.

The grit doesn't directly melt snow as it firstly has to mix with the snow to form a saline solution and lower the melting point.It relies on the action of vehicle tyres to be spread over the road, so requires traffic to be effective. If you feel unsafe to drive, do not attempt to do so and make alternative transport arrangements wherever possible. A failure to identify this as a risk may leave the employer exposed and employees or 3 rd parties at risk of slipping. When we know with certainty from the weather forecast that the roads will require gritting, where possible we carry out the gritting treatment in the evening and/or in the morning. It is important to do this both inside and outside of the workplace, as the effect of light changes during the day.

The sensors are sited either on a representative stretch of road (no nearby trees, buildings or bridges, which offer some protection from the cold), or traditional cold spots. To achieve and efficient gritting/salting regime matching the tools to the size of area can be helpful.Spreading grit at these times also means the roads are treated in advance of peak traffic flows, before the times where frost and ice will form, and when there will be enough traffic on the roads to help the grit mix with the moisture to form a saline solution. It can help stop parked cars slipping on a slope when applied around the tyres and can clear mirrors and windscreens fast to ensure that you have as full a view as possible while out on the road to keep you safe. If, however, you need faster results, use a specially formulated snow and ice melt or grit to remove the ice and add some traction to the surface. Leave plenty of space between you and the car in front – braking distances can increase by up to ten times during snowy conditions.
