About this deal

Cato is leading a Legion in Wales reluctantly whilst Macro now no longer a Legionary is in the reserves but defending Colchester. This book is set during the years AD 60/61, with Cato at one end and Macro at the other end of Britannia. He has also written another series,Revolution, focusing on WellingtonandNapoleon, whose first title,Young Bloods, was published in 2006. The second volume,The Generals, was released on 31 May 2007 and the third volumeFire and Swordwas released in January 2009. The fourth and final novel of the series was released in Jun 2010 and is calledThe Fields of Death. He began publishing a new series in 2011 titledGladiator.

Simon Scarrow is a popular novelist from the United Kingdom, who is best known for his novels based on the Historical Fiction genre. Till date, he has written a total of 5 novel series’ and the most notable novel series written by him is the Eagle Series.I get why people would like this (though I still can't believe how silly the secret mission was) I just expect more from my historical fiction. It wasn't wretched and in fact did some things very well so I may continue with the next one. Especially since the book made the odd choice of cutting off at the very beginning of the invasion of Britain. But this is not likely to become one of my favorite series. I prefer books that aim to capture what life was really like instead of ones that place modern soldiers in a vaguely Roman context. I read a lot of roman story writers Anthony Riches, SJA Turney and they all say you can only work with actual real life people who were in the provinces at the time. He visto que son un montón de libros la serie del optio protagonista este, Cato. Voy a continuar con el siguiente a ver si merece o lo dejo. In the first book of the series,” Under the Eagle,” Cato and Macro are ranked as Optio and Centurion respectively in the Roman army. Emperor Claudius is on a conquest to capture Britain and has sent his forces to war. Some of the senior officers sent to this mission include Vitellius and Vespasian. At the battle front, Macro and Cato start witnessing strange happenings in their camp such as secret missions, betrayals and ambushes. Vitellius, a senior officer who has bad blood with Macro is the cause of all these strange happenings in the camp as he is not at the battle front to fight for Rome, but for his own selfish interests. Vitellius is planning to steal Caesar’s pay chest, that contains a good size of valuable gold. Macro and Cato’s army skills and survival tactics are put to test as they try to survive at the battle front and win not only the battle for Britain but also internal battles in their own camp. The other half of the book is Cato heading a cohort and helping Governor Suetonius Paulinus destroy the druids on Mona.

The story is well know and I won't repeat it here for feel of spoiling it for the reader. Needless to say, both Cato and Macro are involved in some of their deadliest challenges yet. The first half of the book follows this and the eventual start of the rebellion by Boudicca and Macro as senior centurion at Colchester has to deal with the fallout. As a privileged youth at the Capitol in Rome, Cato will have to prove himself very soon with Macro and his other comrades against the local tribes. I wasn't a fan of Simon Scarrow's writings before, though several years ago, I did read the third book of his Eagles of the Empire series, 'Where The Eagle Hunts', where his protagonists Cato and Macro are assisted in their mission by a young Boudica. I often wondered reading that whether their paths would cross again with her during the events that made Boudica a synonymous figure in British history...Well now that moment has arrived, I knew I had to read this novel, set in one of the events of British history I know so well... The tale is set in the year AD 42, and we find Macro in Germania with the 2nd Legion, when a new recruit will be introduced as second in command to Macro, his name being Cato.

An enjoyable read. Historical fiction about a Roman legion, soon after 40AD, firstly facing some hairy, bloodthirsty German barbarians at the frontiers of the Roman Empire, and then taking part in the invasion of Britain and facing some hairy, bloodthirsty British barbarians! Governor Suetonius has been caught off guard by the strength of Boudica's force, and must now race to Londinium with a mounted escort led by Prefect Cato, fully aware that they have little hope of standing against a rebellion on this scale, even if the army following in their wake reaches the city in time. As Suetonius, Cato and their small escort fight their way across country, Cato's worries are increased by his concern for his family in Londinium - and his fears that his old friend Macro may have finally fought his last battle in Camulodunum. What lies in store for this troublesome outpost of the Empire? Whilst Cato is with the legions at Ynys Mon, Macro is with other retired veterans in Camulodunum and their families are in Londinium. The developing events have a devastating affect on all of them. A really great work of fiction set against historical fact. A fab read. This book was... pretty much exactly what I expected. It's good in some ways and kind of meh in a lot of others. For convenience I've grouped them as such below.
