About this deal

There are a real range of reasons that people turn to books when they are compulsorily stuck at home from domestic abuse through loneliness, insecurity, love stories and the inevitable deaths from COVID. It was heartbreaking to hear their stories, especially as I was pretty sure they would be based on true accounts. There’s a woman who’s just escaped from an abusive husband…and there’s a moody teenager who takes what seems to be an irrational dislike to Kelly.

Fell in love with the characters and their stories that happened in a time that I turned to books as well. The poignancy of characters and story was phenomenal and it will forever be one of my favourite books. At times there is humour although not as much as in the last book which is understandable given the serious nature of the times. Sometimes we see the person request the book again, we get to learn what happened in the next chapter, sometimes we don’t. While fiction, it is packed with the realities of what real people encountered, suffered through, triumphed over.Though at times this was a bit real and hard to read about Covid pandemic times again, this was such a gorgeous read. I loved the quotes and the chapters where it feels that Stephanie Butland is talking to me personally about the power of books and reading. Loved also that so many great books are mentioned and recommended, especially for specific needs, recovering from loss, and adding to wonderful events and hopes for the future.

Also in Jersey, although we had a lockdown and restrictions in 2020, and then small ones again later on, it was nothing like what the UK experienced. She knows he would do great things, but would also expect her to look after her readers, and so she suggests opening a book pharmacy! It's filled with the recommendations that they provide - books for loneliness, books to scare you, books for being normal or books to travel somewhere new. By participating in the Kindle App Challenge this first Qtr, I completed 3 books for the month of January. But the Kindle edition was available for just 99p, and we were just a few days away from flying to the UK.

All in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to exploring the reading suggestions at the back of the book. Yet again Stephanie Butland has hit upon a wonderful idea and has created some lovely characters in these vignettes, all of whom have a different issue. It also brought into sharp clarity the ease with which it is possible to put someone in danger, quite unintentionally, because of naivety on our part. I like the concept of the book, as book lovers we already know the joy of reading and the idea of prescribing books as a form of medicine or a remedy is a good one. I liked the idea that when you read the first sentence of any book, you are completing the author’s work.

The idea about the book pharmacy and using books to fill the void whether we’re in a pandemic or just feeling a little lost in the world. Stephanie lives near the sea in the north-east of England, with her husband Alan and Harris the greyhound.I'd recommend this book to book lovers as it contains lots of book recommendations within it and I've written quite a few down.

While I've read thousands and have a sizeable home library, few books have ever begged me to read them again. All of those things are legitimate realities, but they felt a little more tossed in there than part of the story itself. Along the journey there is kindness and thoughtfulness, there are situations that arise that overcome preconceptions and finding commonality along with plenty of honesty. Of course, this is the pandemic- we meet people who are struggling with COVID, with isolation, with abuse. The novel encourages us to remember that sometimes, to move forward, there are goodbyes, and many are goodbyes that we never want to say. Thank-you Netgalley and Headline books for approving my ARC request, it was an absolute pleasure to read. I have just finished it, I struggled to start with which I think was due to the formatting on my arc from netgalley.
