About this deal

Discover the answers to these questions – and many more – in this incredible collection of scientific facts about colour, by real life Astronomer Dr Sheila Kanani! The introduction explains what light is and how the human eye perceives it, and as well as the ROYGBIV colours, there are sections on black and white, fluorescence, infrared and ultraviolet, and an explanation of how some animals can see in the dark. Dr Sheila Kanani MBE is a British astronomer and is the Education, Outreach and Diversity Officer at the Royal Astronomical Society and is dedicated to improving the representation of girls and women in physics. Each colour of the rainbow has its own section with pages and pages focused on the science, history, cultural meaning , natural occurrences and use of the colour throughout time. I would recommend this book as part of a library, or in the book corner, for children to pick up and become engrossed in.

Ada Lovelace Day is dependent on the generosity of its partners, volunteers and supporters for survival. Before that she spent 25 years teaching in Essex where she worked as a teacher and part of the Essex School Improvement Team as a Literacy Consultant; before finally becoming Headteacher of a Primary School.Career Case Study: Dr Sheila Kanani is an inspiring interview with the author which many students would find fascinating. I loved the quick 'at a glance' paragraph at the start of each section detailing the wavelength of each of the colours quite simply.

Full of entertaining and memorable well – explained facts presented in well designed pages – loads of fun for children who like to know about their world. Her favourite 'work' interests are teaching GCSE Astronomy and giving public talks to audiences of all ages and sizes, while representing her place of work, the Royal Astronomical Society, which she adores. Starting with the most important thing – light – Sheila Kanani explores what light actually is and how it is perceived by the human eye. Then the layout of the text is quite original: each chapter covering one of the seven colours of the rainbow. Can You Get Rainbows in Space is a stunning kaleidoscope beaming out a huge range of science topics, from astronomy to zoology, expertly stitched together by the threads of colours!

Beautifully illustrated in full colour, this is a visual feast of a book which uses a rainbow to guide you through a universe of amazing scientific facts comparable to Bill Bryson's A Really Short History of Nearly Everything.

The facts are both fun and informative and illustrations by Liz Kay take the reader right through a vibrant colour palette and are so visually stimulating for a young reader. As the most iconic and well-known children’s book brand in the UK today, we are always on the lookout for innovative ways to tell the world’s favourite stories and for brilliant new debut talent and brands that connect with today’s young readers, from newborn up to twelve years old. Interestingly, too, the primary colours of light that humans can see are red, blue and green – and when you mix green and red light they make yellow! Each section is based on a colour of the rainbow (plus some added extras ‘beyond the rainbow’ such as black, white and fluorescent colours) and, after an introduction to that colour, asks five colour-based questions. Keep reading to discover why leaves change colour in the autumn, why your veins look blue but your blood is red, and why the language we use shapes the colours we see .
