About this deal

This is actually the second Eerie-on-Sea mystery which doesn’t appear to involve any sea legends, but I wondered if it is inspired by ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. The team must figure out the complicated issue of what happened, who was actually involved, and where was Sophie? I loved this book and especially the descriptions of the Yorkshire countryside, the quirky characters and the contrasts that Harry experiences to his previous role. Long passages about the village which were fine but repetitive after 80 pages of hearing about the bloody cake and cheese and tea. This is a superbly written and narrated debut crime novel from Mr Gasward, it is exciting edge of the seat stuff that keeps you entertained from page 1 to the very end.

The only reason for the 4 stars, rather than 5 for Storyline is that the mystery was easy to solve well before the reveal— but overall it is highly recommended and I have found a new favorite! Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is forced to take leave from Bristol’s Major Investigations Team when his boss, tired of Harry chasing the ghost of his murderous father, sends him north on secondment. What a refreshing change, a good thriller and storyline, funny yet bloody and so very different from the normal crime thriller reads.

The book cover has no visible wear, and the dust jacket (if applicable) is included for hard covers. The plot was an easy solve though and I will read the next one mainly because I’m curious to see if he can mention the Paras more than 12 times. I was intrigued immediately as I read the first page and was so happy I had the three books together. Twenty years ago, Harry found his mother dead and 10-year-old brother Ben devastated and unable to recover from it.

An introduction was added urging parents to make sure the subject matter was suitable before sharing the stories with their children. If you have a long drive ahead of you and don’t want to be too distracted from the road, this might suit.

Detective Chief Inspector Harry Grimm is forced to take leave from Bristol's Major Investigations Team when his boss, tired of Harry chasing the ghost of his murderous father, sends him north on secondment. The first 80 odd pages were just talk of Grimm being ugly and having a past in the Paras (shot every time his face or the Paras are mentioned and you'll soon have a fun drinking game). It’s all part of a large, organized conspiracy run by greedy and cruel people, something no one had looked for out here in the country. Whilst I enjoyed it thoroughly, it was the contrast between some of the heavier crime novels I’ve been reading of late, that I found most interesting.
