About this deal

As the nuclear exchange between NATO and the Warsaw Pact begins, the film depicts the medical, economic, social and environmental consequences of nuclear war. Threads works on the viewer with a peculiar power: one finds oneself horrified, fascinated, numbed, provoked, unsettled, made restless. Threads was broadcast in the United States on cable network Superstation TBS on 13 January 1985, [19] with Ted Turner presenting the introduction. A scene towards the end of the film finds Jane undergoing a crude form of education - one of the cornerstones of society - and, later, she unravels old threads so that something new can be created. Crucial themes such as society's dependence on conformity are thrust to the forefront and almost all of the deeper horror in Threads comes from the barbarism of a broken, mangled society.

O'Connor of The New York Times wrote that the film "is not a balanced discussion about the pros and cons of nuclear armaments. The makeup for extras playing third-degree-burn victims consisted of Rice Krispies and tomato ketchup. The critical consensus reads: "An urgent warning against nuclear conflict, Threads is a chilling hypothetical that achieves visceral horror with its matter-of-fact presentation of an apocalypse". Threads was first commissioned (under the working title Beyond Armageddon) by the Director-General of the BBC Alasdair Milne, after he watched the 1965 drama-documentary The War Game, which had not been shown on the BBC when it was made, due to pressure from the Wilson government, although it had had a limited release in cinemas. My favorite extra that’s been included is Stephen Thrower on Threads, who is always a welcome sight. The effects are devastating with every infrastructure in the country being reduced to a scorched shadow of its former self. S. A fictionalized (but not totally unrealistic) take on what would happen before, during, and after a nuclear attack, it’s known today as one of the darkest and most frightening looks at the subject matter, particularly for a TV movie. According to Jackson, so immersive was his experience behind the camera that “it took years to get out of my head”. Against a backdrop of radiation sickness, martial law and the harsh realities of living in amongst ruined buildings, Ruth struggles to find any sense of control or sanctity.
