About this deal

Violet finds an old newspaper which leads her to Benjamin Blackthorn, a reluctant detective who has given up the trade in favour of selling furniture in the old, slightly seedy part of town. If you are in a reading slump look no further , this is a beautiful, fun easy to read book unlike any I have read in a while. She has no intention of becoming any man’s property and the thought of what goes on in the marital bedroom – from everything she’s been told, which admittedly isn’t very much – fills her with dread. Daisy Buchanan ‘So original and well written, I couldn’t put it down… I can’t remember rooting for a heroine as hard as I did for Violet.

The most notable stumbling block of this book, which I would be remiss not to mention, is Morley Cleaveland's attitude towards Native Americans. She then finds herself working for the second detective in town and decides that becoming a lady detective is what she would really like to do with the rest of her life. I received a copy of No Life for a Lady by Hannah Dolby from NetGalley and Aria and Aries in exchange for an honest review. I did wonder why it took her so long to decide to finally investigate her mother’s disappearance but that was mostly a minor thing for me.Took me a while to warm up to Violet, but she has a lot of character growth and it's easy to root for her. Which, in 1896, can make things a little complicated…At 28, Violet’s father is beginning to worry she will never find a husband. What is lost is how the author was able to simultaneously live in a particular world while having access to a more universal world as an educated woman (she attended Stanford). Violet is a sparky, likeable character who is determined to resist her father’s efforts to marry her off.

Some of those investigations turn out to be real eye-openers for a sheltered young spinster: tailing a woman’s fiancé, breaking into a museum, visiting a brothel, and foiling a theft; but “I wanted to find my mother. No Life for a Lady is light-hearted, cosy historical mystery with a touch of romance from Hannah Dolby. I could continue counting my grievances with this book (mostly including the underwhelming mystery, the misplaced romance, and the slightly odd obsession with sex education), but I’d rather save my time, and my review writing mood for better books. While I don't think I can ever hope to understand the totality of this part of the world that I love, I still find myself drawn to resources which capture it throughout its changeable history and give me a glimpse into others' experiences across space and time. Violet Hamilton is a woman who knows her own mind - which, in 1896, can make things a little complicated. I liked Violet’s character, she struggles with what society wants her to be and I always love a ‘rule breaker’ so in that I enjoyed Violet’s character. My understanding of westward expansion was far different when I was in fourth grade and playing Oregon Trail than it is now, and my feelings about being a person of European descent living on stolen land are, frankly, a tangled mess. It completely took me by surprise how quickly I engaged with the characters and plot and I hope this becomes a series as I can’t wait to follow the rest of violets adventures. Several chapters are pretty much nothing more than just Violet thinking variations of the same things again and again. But Violet feels she would know if her mother had died, and thinks she could be out there somewhere, maybe even needing help. It's mostly about Violet's picaresque hijinks around Hastings as she gets a job, finds her spine, has various comedy enncounters and falls in love, interspersed with really quite unpleasant sexual aggression from a variety of men, plus her massive sexual trauma and abandonment inflicted by her mother. No Life For A Lady is driven by Violet’s determination to become a lady detective, but what pushes the character forward is the personal mystery surrounding her mother’s disappearance. the plot suddenly began to unfold and Violet became more of an active participant, in stead of just a thinker. As the detective proves to be less and less trustworthy, she tries to hire another one - enter Benjamin Blackthorn, an adorable giant who really wants to drop the whole detective business and live a quiet life selling furniture.

Fascinating biography recorded by the author from the life story of Agnes Morley Cleveland as she told it in 1940s. Charming, exhilarating, fabulously funny and so full of heart - Violet is the heroine I've been waiting for. If anyone imagines that the early settlers, by maintaining a proper attitude, could have lived in amity with the Indians, let him consider how little amity existed between the various Indian tribes themselves.

I am beyond thankful to Tandem Collective, Head of Zeus and Hannah Dolby, for letting me join this special readalong. Beautifully written, and very evocative of it's time, I really enjoyed this novel about a girl growing up in the 1890s but with very much a mind of her own. I was lucky to receive an exclusive interactive readalong edition copy, full with QR codes, challenges and topics to discuss whilst reading the book.
