This is the Reposado expression from Tequila El Rayo, which distils 100% Blue Weber agave in 105 year old copper stills and matured for seven months in casks that previously held whiskey before being bottled.El Rayo translates to 'the lightning', and the name is an homage to the legend that lightning struck a Blue Weber agave plant, cooking it and creating the first Tequila. This particular expression is not made with lightning, but with 105 year old copper stills, which distil the Blue Weber agave twice before its bottled up straight from the still. There are over 200 varieties of agave but by law only the blue agave can be used in the production of tequila.
Rested in ex-whisky casks for 7 months, it has a golden caramel colour and a rich, nutty complexity. Although less complex in flavours than it’s plata, the reposado is beautifully smooth and perfect to sip on.The General Wine Company sources wines from all over the world, but with a particular focus on small, independent producers. Overall, it's a vibrant tequila, with a citrus (almost tropical) note, fresh herbal tones and a peppery finish that pair perfectly with bittersweet taste of tonic water. El Rayo takes its name from Mexican folklore, with tells of the great bolt of lightning – El Rayo –striking the blue agave in the hills near Tequila. The brand was created by two South Londoners who collaborated with some master producers to craft an agave alternative to gin.
