About this deal

In addition to the above mentioned ceramic sharpening stones there are also ceramic sharpening stones to which extra sharpening particles were added. Comparable to the garnets in a natural stone these sharpening particles are extra hard and often made from synthetic sapphire. Also known from the watch glass in more expensive watches. Examples of these types of stones are the sharpening stones made by Spyderco and Fällkniven. Diamond-coated sharpening stones Sharpening stones with cubic boron nitride are manufactured in pretty much the same way as synthetic diamonds. The particles of cubic boron nitride are galvanized in a metal layer that is placed on a metal base. CBN crystals are also grown under high pressure and at high temperatures to speed up or simulate the natural growing process. The speed of this process, however, is a lot lower than the comparable process used for synthetic diamond. Good lighting and 10x-15x loop will easily show the small burr which is very difficult to see unaided.

Also the other thing that most people don't realize is that although diamonds are harder then CBN at room temp when diamonds get hot from friction they also get softer then CBN and that's why a lot of big company's from what I have read prefer CBN grinding wheels better for large scale production when using steels that need to be ground down and are difficult to work with. This is where the fixed abrasives are a god-send as you can trivially bring knives to very high sharpness with even coarse plates such as the Spyderco CBN assuming you use 1- lubricant, 2 - light pressure, - edge forward strokes at slightly higher angle to grind a micro bevel, 3 - alternating strokes from one side to other/ crossing scratch patterns. All of this will tend to avoid forming a burr when actually directly grinding on the apex. Metallic CBN stones may have tone imperfections. Metallic CBN may become darker over time due to natural metal oxidizing, it does not affect the sharpening. Can you use ceramic stones,,,, yes, but they will mainly burnish and not cut the carbides like diamond and CBN. Small tough burrs will be formed too easily with poor apex formation. The best way I can describe how the 50 grit Metallic Bonded CBN stone worked is to say that it just cut's threw S110v like it's nothing just plain and simply put it's easier then taking candy from a tied up baby, the grit also produced filing's that looked like long metal hairs that look like they were made by a power tool then a sharpening stone, the rest of the grit's also removed metal very very fast and all I can say is that you can sharpen S110v much much faster then with any other stones that I have tried and the only ones that come close are the Venev Industrial diamond stones and they are slouch either when it comes to sharpening S110v or any steel for that matter.I also stropped the edge with Poltava CBN Paste and I started with 10,7,3,1,.5,.25 Micron and I used Kangaroo leather strop's on my K02 that I made myself.

Natural sharpening stones

Art Supplies Artist Paint & Pencils Paint Brushes Craft Tools Stamps & Stencils Cutting Tools & Mats Resin & Accessories Craft Books All Craft Shop The 4 micron CBN emulsion used in conjunction with one of our new Kangaroo leather strops is quite possibly the single most impressive sharpening accessory we’ve ever used and every single person who’s tried it agrees. One kangaroo strop and one bottle of 4 micron CBN emulsion are “must have” items!

The problem with them being soldered in place is that when you are sharpening the diamond's are so hard they dig and hook into the steel and get torn out when you sharpen and then you do not have many diamonds left on the diamond stone.Where as with Metallic Bonding the CBN stone's I have the CBN particle's are better anchored in and are much harder to tear out. I'm personally not a fan of reprofiling very wear resistant steels on the sharpmakers diamond or CBN rods, but there are many folks here who have done it and it works for them. Its a very slow process and your angle selection is limited but it can be done.

Pros and cons of ceramic sharpening stones

If you reverse those two categories of stone for each role (shaping vs sharpening), you have made your job much more complicated and involved and in general it will take you much longer and/or require elaborate deburring steps. With something like a simple Naniwa Multistone 1000 : one can literally grind all day with a creamy slurry created by just a few passes of a flattening plate like an Atoma and NEVER actually reach a strong burr or sharp apex. Modification of products, materials, measurements, technical specifications and availability can occur. That is interesting but perhaps you could share more information and someone aside from Cliff may have some insight? I have a Nikon microscope with variable power and several eyepieces that gives 10x-80x magnification. This is not the fingernail or finger print test.
