About this deal

These are the people (minority) that made Criterion stop giving us both discs, like all major companies did. I wanted to give my Mother, one of her favorites- ‘Bitter Rice’, on dvd & I keep the blu ray. These people are stopping blu ray & 4k from taking off, permanently. Storage for these two, would mean less discs. The new Bonanza on dvd only, has 112 discs. Someone who’s more inclined can tell us how many blu rays & 4ks they would take. NEW Audio Commentaries for DEAD WEIGHT/DAGGER OF THE MIND/ANY OLD PORT IN A STORM/DOUBLE EXPOSURE/SWAN SONG/AN EXERCISE IN FATALITY/FORGOTTEN LADY/NOW YOU SEE HIM.../OLD FASHIONED MURDER by Author/Historian David Koenig Honored to have been asked to contribute ten audio commentaries to Kino Lorber Studio Classics prodigious Columbo Blu-Ray set.

According to Frank Tarzi, VP of Acquisitions at Kino Lorber, there are two Columbo boxsets in the works: one featuring the ‘classic era’ 1968-78 episodes; and the second containing the 1989-2003 revival episodes. The classic episodes are set to be released in late summer, with the ‘new Columbo‘ set following in late 2023 or early 2024. NEW Audio Commentaries for RANSOM FOR A DEAD MAN/MURDER BY THE BOOK by Screenwriter/Historian Gary Gerani NEW Audio Commentary for MIND OVER MAYHEM by Historian/Filmmaker Craig Bream with Special Guest Bill MaloneIncludes the 1968 Movie-of-the-Week “Prescription: Murder” and the 1971 Pilot “Ransom for a Dead Man” And a very, very special thanks to Jenni Matz and The Interviews: An Oral History of Television for their extraordinary passion for this project and for providing incomparable archival audio and interviews with the men and women who helped make Columbo a legendary television series. All of those are definite high points for me, too. I would also add Murder By The Book, The Bye-Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case and Suitable For Framing. The look on the murderer’s face in that last episode when he is caught is wonderful. NEW Audio Commentaries for MURDER BY THE BOOK/LADY IN WAITING/REQUIEM FOR A FALLING STAR/LOVELY BUT LETHAL/CANDIDATE FOR CRIME/NEGATIVE REACTION/IDENTITY CRISIS/THE BYE-BYE SKY HIGH IQ MURDER CASE/MAKE ME A PERFECT MURDER/HOW TO DIAL A MURDER by Author/Historian Jim Benson

Kino Lorber will release the first Blu-ray volume of the classic TV series Columbo on November 21, 2023. The 20-disc boxed set includes all episodes from the first 7 seasons in 5 separate Blu-ray cases.Starring Peter Falk in his four-time Emmy-winning role as the cigar-chomping, trenchcoat-wearing police lieutenant, this 20-disc collection includes every criminally entertaining episode from the series' first seven seasons. PF: You were right. Shopping is good here. There’s much to choose from. Just a moment…and this brand? PF: I’d like to understand why COOP is the number one in Italy. Excuse me, just a question…why do you come here? NEW Audio Commentaries for PRESCRIPTION: MURDER/BLUEPRINT FOR MURDER/A STITCH IN CRIME/A FRIEND IN DEED/TROUBLED WATERS/LAST SALUTE TO THE COMMODORE/TRY AND CATCH ME by Author Mark Dawidziak If I post all the links for these, I’ll be unable to submit the comment, but I’ll keep trying. Otherwise, you can scour youtube for these items that can go on a wish list, things you may have already been aware of, but let’s get them in Blu-Ray quality:

There’s a clip somewhere of Falk on Carson, excited about the upcoming 1974 “Exercise in Fatality” episode and “new writer” Peter Fischer. I’ve seen it before, can’t find it today. The Bye-Bye Sky High IQ Murder Case is a great one too! I love the whole mechanism of the book and the record player. What a moment in time that such things were readily available. It's such a different world now. Note that all the shows were remastered to HD from the original negatives about 7-8 years ago by Universal Digital Video Services. So basically, all Kino Lorber is doing is just getting the files from NBC/Universal and putting them out on Blu-rau. NEW Audio Commentary for FADE IN TO MURDER by Author/Historian Amanda Reyes and Author/Podcaster Daniel R. Budnik Due to unforeseen issues, we can no longer include all the new audio commentaries, essay and other extras we had produced for our upcoming Columbo: 1970s boxed set.”

I have so many favorite episodes and murderers. Basically any 70s episode is absolutely worth watching. She wasn’t a techie or a gadget person. She listened to me. I was an accessory salesman, then an audio salesman & finally video cameras & projection tvs & vcrs. I left as dvds were coming out in ‘97. J&R music, then Computer, then various individually named stores across from City Hall in NYC.

The latest statement from Kino has these as the only listed extras: The first of several Peter Falk “Columbo” appearances on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show”, 9/15/72: Falk on the couch wearing his raincoat: “Listen, Johnny, I don’t wanna plug the show….”

All ten commentaries will include excerpts from my radio show, Jim Benson's TV Time Machine - Travels to TV's past, present and future of my interview with Peter Falk (his last ever) talking about his life, career, and Columbo.
