About this deal

As an early user of the SQ-64 these are things I’ve been calling out for and it’s so good to see them finally implemented. Still nothing on the strange per-note arpeggiator. It is a great sequencer, with lots of cool ideas and some awkward flaws. It looks like most of the flaws have been dealt with. I love this method, which is reminiscent of using something like a Novation launchpad. If it’s lit you know you will be in key. There are all the usual suspects when it comes to scale choice but I couldn’t find a way to save my own custom scales. A small omission maybe but one that I hope can be fixed in a firmware update. The OLED screen adapts to the mode and shows you what the 4 encoders will be controlling. There are options like “Rotate” which moves the sequence about itself, “Fill” which adds in extra steps and “Slide” for the sort of curve you want for pitch sliding. These all change to reflect where you are and come up with all sorts of interesting things. Shift

Step Record: You can now enter a bunch of notes in an SH-101 sequencing style. Press a note and it moves to the next step. You can add rests and ties as you go. You can also now copy steps to another step. Each step can be set to Mono, Chord or Arpeggiator. Mono and Chord (or polyphonic) are self‑explanatory, but switch it to arpeggiator and something sounds immediately wrong. The arpeggiator is moving so fast it sounds like a gurgle and I haven’t found a way of improving upon it. I have to assume that it should have time divisions and hopefully these will come along in an update because unfortunately at the moment it’s unusable. Mod Mode

You should get an instant answer on whether your application has been successful, though in some rare cases Klarna or V12 may need to look at the application in more detail. You'll hit the ground running thanks to the wide range of plugins that come with the SQ-64. These include; Company takes no responsibility for any loss including but not limited to loss of data, financial loss, or personal loss) that might arise from the use of, or the inability to use, the manual library or the specified software. Use the integrated arpeggiator to add further intrigue to your sounds - squeezing every bit of potential out of your digital/analog synths and soft plugins too. If the SQ64 is not on part of the first 10 connected unit on you PC you need to fiddle around with your midi the driver list... (why is this a thing...)

To dial in a note value you hold the step button. You’ll find space for eight notes for each step, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t seem to add more than the first note using the screen, buttons and knobs. It appears that chords can only be added and then edited by recording them in live. This feels like an oversight, because once the notes are there you can edit all of them, and it appears to me that the same function could just as easily be used to turn on extra notes. Once you have a chord on a step you can also transpose it and dial in some inversions. The CV output always gets the lowest note. One thing for sure, the SQ-64 offers an immediate way to create and edit sequences on the fly, but also to interact with the steps once they are written - I really like the easy access to the trigger probability and ratcheting, in combination, you can create some evolving and inspiring patterns, particularly when working with beats, it's just a shame we can record the initial pattern in from an external MIDI device. You may not duplicate, alter, modify, rent, lease, resell, assign, loan, sub-license, distribute the whole or part of the Licensed Program, or make derivative works based on what is contained in the Licensed Program. (However, it is not included in this restriction that you create derivative works based on the data file(s).) Where there is a major let down is the firmware. Here are the major faults and the reasons why I returned it: Support services such as technical support or upgrade support for this product are provided according to the support service policies of Korg’s distributors applicable in each country.
