About this deal

The Neo QLED QN95A ran the OLED pretty close, but it laps this traditional QLED. The QLED Q80A falls into the common trap of being too dark, but while the two models above stumble into gloom, the Q80A falls headfirst into it. With its astonishingly narrow frame, slim rear, monolithic shape and an Ambient mode that can play artworks or photos on screen when you’re not actually watching the TV, the QN95B can actually enhance rather then ruin a stylish room. Don’t buy it if… When we assess a TV, we play a range of content designed to highlight specific aspects of the picture - from detail to motion control and, of course, contrast. Percentage luminance drop at 35 degree horizontal angle from the centre of the screen with 100% white output And it’s not just bright for the sake of it. White tones are detailed, nuanced, feature lots of gradation and variation, and basically make good on all the technology promises in this regard. So at least in this respect, it’s job done.

The Q95T’s colour accuracy is better than that of the Q90R, too. After calibration, we measured an average Delta E of 1.28, with only a couple of colours exceeding the humanly perceptible error threshold for moving video content. Most colours, including skin tones, look incredibly accurate and natural. Of the Q95T’s various picture presets, Movie Mode is the most accurate. The QN95B supports high dynamic range in the form of HDR10, HLG (hybrid log-gamma) and HDR10+. Sadly, Samsung still refuses to support Dolby Vision, but given the native HDR capabilities of this TV it’s debatable how much benefit the dynamic metadata format would add. With state-of-the-art Quantum Matrix Technology, Samsung's Quantum Mini LED delivers super-fine detail, epic contrast and a brilliantly intense picture. Samsung's cutting-edge Neural Quantum Processor 4K powers a supreme 4K image, and advanced AI sound. The Samsung QN95B is a great choice for gamers, and not just because there’s no danger of the screen burn that can affect OLED TVs. It offers a host of features for next-gen consoles, including support for 4K at 120Hz (and even 144Hz in some cases) and VRR (variable refresh rate) to reduce tearing, plus there’s also support for AMD FreeSync Premium Pro and Motion Xcelerator Turbo Pro technology.

Some features of Ambient Mode require Internet connection, a compatible smartphone, and SmartThings app. A moving dot test pattern reveals there are 40 horizontal and 18 vertical zones, giving a total of 720 independently dimmable zones. This is a slight reduction on last year, although the local dimming implementation appears to be more effective despite having fewer zones. The local dimming was excellent too, with no obvious blooming or haloing. Flares and burning buildings in the night-time village sequence in 1917 looked very bright, and also benefited from HDR10+ dynamic metadata. The torches in the night-time scene towards the end of The Revenant also looked wonderful, with the subtle natural lighting being reproduced with accuracy.

This awesome 4K HDR TV seamlessly combines gorgeous design, cutting-edge tech and advanced features

Samsung’s AI machine learning system has been improved again so that the QN95B now draws on the know-how of no less than 20 image-analyzing neural networks, with its own processor choosing the best picture handling results for any given image scenario from the vast database of knowledge so many neural networks can provide. Samsung isn’t daft enough to get carried away where the design of its TVs is concerned, and especially not when a range (like this one) is intended to have the broadest possible appeal. So the QE55QN85B, quite sensibly, is an unstated and actually quite sophisticated looker.
