About this deal

Rode has given the VideoMic Go II a new acoustic design that we’ve previously seen with the Rode VideoMic NTG and NTG 5 microphones. It features annular line tube technology which is claimed to enable unmatched transparency and rich sound.

and USB-C: There’s a 3.5mm TRS connection to use with cameras and a USB output for connecting to mobile devices and computers I hadn’t listened to all three microphones side-by-side until I was editing that footage, but while I was editing, the VideoMic GO II sounded very impressive – bearing in mind, that each of these microphones was recorded straight into the camera and Panasonic isn’t famous for its great preamps. The VideoMic GO II is host powered, so it hasn't got a battery of its own (this probably also helps keep the weight down). I found only one issue with the simplicity: there is no way of telling whether the VideoMic GO II is active or not as there are no LEDs on the body.

Fortunately, it seems that the Rode VideoMic GO II doesn’t really need any noise reduction for the most part – that will depend on just how bad your camera’s preamps may be, though. I’ve applied none at all in the video above to the three microphones being compared and even on Sennheiser HD25 studio headphones, I couldn’t hear any noise that was distracting or really all that noticeable at all.

Rode VideoMic Go II at a glance:

I enjoyed using the RODE VideoMic GO II. It's a handy little directional mic and perfect for when you need a lightweight mic to record sound on the go. I loved how the microphone recorded bird chatter and how well it isolated sound in front of the camera, even in noisy environments. Three Panasonic G80 (G85 for folks in the USA) holding the Rode VideoMicro, VideoMic GO II and VideoMic NTG Wenn du dagegen ein Gerät mit USB-C Eingang verwendest, wie zum Beispiel ein Android-Smartphone oder ein iPad® Pro, benötigst du ein optionales USB-C auf USB-C Kabel, wie das RØDE SC16, SC17 oder SC22. The VideoMic GO II is definitely much closer in sound and performance to the VideoMic NTG than it is to the VideoMicro, and you can hear it, for sure. They’re don’t quite sound identical, though.Wind noise aside, the VideoMic GO II did a great job recording minor sounds outside, such as chains rattling and even the footsteps of different people walking past the camera. As you can hear in the video above, though, there really isn’t much difference at all between using the microphone “naked” or using it with the WS12 Deluxe Windshield, so you’re not going to take the hit in audio quality that you often do with windshields.
