About this deal

They need access to water and nutrients 24/7 – when the plants want them, rather than when we give them. Recommended use: Container pots used for shrubs, herbaceous and climbers’ examples: poinsettia & large cyclamen. These can be used for potting on as the plant matures and needs a bigger pot. First, chit (sprout) the seed potatoes by placing them in egg boxes and positioning them in a warm sunny place for a few days. Next, fill your containers to about a third of its depth with a general compost. For a 30 litre container place one seed potato in the centre. For a 40 litre or bigger container, place 3 seed potatoes, evenly spaced. Cover the seed potatoes with compost so that two thirds of the container is now full. As the emerging plants get bigger, add more compost until the container is full to within 2.5cm of the top. Apply water regularly and feed the plants with fish, blood and bone or a proprietary potato fertiliser.

The last rule is the same for all plants grown in containers. Keep them well watered. Keep in mind that, normally, plants can extend their roots deep into the soil in search of water, but when grown in containers the roots are confined and as such are reliant on you to keep the soil moist. Dimensions: 59.5cm diameter top, 42.8cm diameter base and 48cm depth. Internal top diameter 55cm. Capacity: 90 litres. The are made from durable HDPE Plastic they will last many seasons before they need replacing. Please Note: All Sizes are approximate. This space requirement is off-putting for many gardeners as it means either removing plants to make room or giving up on the idea of eating tasty, homegrown potatoes.

This method doesn’t require any growing medium at all – roots are suspended in a trough of flowing water and nutrients, a bit like a horizontal drain pipe. Water and nutrients flow over the roots several times each day (or hour!) and plants are able to access all they need. It is particularly important for those feeding organically that there is plenty of oxygen in the root system because soil microbes need oxygen too! I must say I have been very successful applying feed and water via saucers in which final pots (not breathable Rhizopots) stand: seaweed as a balanced food, various tomorite concentrations or comfrey tea as potassium-rich food. Rarely after June 1st will this cause root problems and pots can be removed from saucers if cool weather visits. Applying liquid morning and evening (lunchtime too if temp exceeds 27C) means plants are always receiving water and nutrients on a daily basis. Fertilizer. The decision to use fertilizer comes down to personal choice. Some gardeners prefer to mix slow releasing fertilizer into the soil during potting, whereas others prefer to use natural liquid plant feed once the foliage has developed. Regardless of what you choose, read and follow the fertilizer instructions and do not overfeed the plant.

Just to take the point to the extreme, a lot of supermarket tomatoes (the best quality ones) are now grown using the Nutrient Film Techniques (NFT). When digging the hole you shouldallow for around 30% increase in the pot size for depth and width so for example a 20 litre pot is 34cm diameter x 27cm depth - the planting hole should be around 44cm diameter x 35cm depth. The same calculation can be used if repotting into a larger pot on arrival. So now that the potatoes have been planted that’s it, right? Wrong. There is more work to be done during the growing process. This additional work is called hilling. Other gravity-fed systems come with old fashioned solid pots, whereas the EasyFeed system is equipped with fabric pots. Solid pots create lower numbers of longer roots that circle repeatedly around the bottom of containers. Most of the substrate in your containers is often left unoccupied by roots, which is obviously a huge waste. Cloth pots fix this fundamental issue using something called ‘root-pruning’.Dimensions: 50cm diameter top, 35.5cm diameter base and 35.5cm depth. Internal top diameter 45cm. Capacity: 43 litres.

Dimensions: 55.5cm diameter top, 39cm diameter base and 48.2cm depth. Internal top diameter 50.5cm. Capacity: 75 litres. Cover the potatoes with approximately 5-10 cm of soil, don’t worry if this doesn’t seem like enough you will understand why it should be done like this later. Our pots can be bought with saucers to fit. Our plant pot saucers act as a water retention unit, which can not only save you the mess of soily water but can provide a steady source of water to the plants it’s under. Dimensions: 64cm diameter top, 46.3cm diameter base and 53.5cm depth. Internal top diameter 59.5cm. Capacity: 125 litres.

This particular range of large plant pots have handles fitted to the top rim of the pot. Making them easy to move and transport when needed.

To find out more information about the sizes available please look table of measurement below. Size May has been unbelievable for tomatoes here: perfect temps, plenty of sun, not too cold at night. The size of these larger plants varies according to the particular variety and the age of the plant, but as a rough guide, 10 litre plants fall in the range 75 - 120cm (2½ - 4ft) high, while the 30 litres are generally 90 - 150cm (3 - 5ft). For a 10 litre plant the rootball is 27cm (10½") diameter and 20cm (8") deep, 36cm (14") x 30cm (12") for a 30 litre. What's your favourite potato variety for growing in containers, and why? Place your potato containers in an area that gets at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day.
