About this deal

I have this one, and I love it. Not used my iron in about two years! Only downside is it has a fairly small water reservoir, so if I'm doing a long maxi dress, I usually need to refill the water. But other than that, it's great. So much faster and easier than using a clunky iron and ironing board.” (Recommended by Mumsnet user WineGetsMeThroughIt)

The water chamber is clear, which lets you see how much water is left in the steam cycle. It’s also designed with an effective carrying handle, which made transporting to and from the sink much less awkward than its competitors.

6. Best basic clothes steamer: Steamworks Handheld Garment Steamer

Either way, we're here to bring you up to date and over to the dark side. We know that a crisp, wrinkle-free outfit is almost as satisfying as a warm blanket fresh from the dryer. But honestly, getting the wrinkles out of a pair of linen pants or a silk button-down is a lot harder than it looks. From the positioning on the iron board and getting the right amount of water to temperature ratio, to burning more delicate fabrics, the ironing ritual requires more skill than it lets on. Of all the travel steamers we tested, the True & Tidy Handheld Garment Steamer stood out the most and is the one to undeniably add to your suitcase. This colorful unit weighs just 1.5 pounds, and it breaks down into two pieces, making it extremely easy to stash in a bag of any size. We loved that its water reservoir is completely see-through, which allowed us to monitor exactly how much water was left. And it excelled in our testing, removing tough wrinkles with just a few passes, thanks to its powerful steam and stainless steel soleplate. We think it's important to note that this steamer doesn't come with any kind of stand or prop to help it sit upright. Our main concern was finding the right angle to rest it to prevent the hot plate from burning the surface that it was resting on. We recommend keeping this steamer out of reach of children and pets, especially given the ceramic plate, and be sure to rest it on a heat-resistant surface, rather than wood or fabric.

The steamer has 700 watts, so it took two and a half minutes to heat up and start producing steam. The Hilife’s steam isn’t very forceful, so it took us 7 minutes to steam a shirt. The finished shirt wasn’t completely wrinkle-free, and it had water spots from the Hilife’s frequent spitting. The long power cord also made it easy to maneuver around the garments that we steamed during testing. However, this steamer's compact size does mean that the water tank has to be refilled frequently. If you have multiple garments to steam, you may need to refill between items. We'll also note that this steamer wasn't great at completely eliminating deep-set wrinkles, since it doesn't have any attachments. We were pleased that it did not drip at all during testing, though, which is a huge win for a smaller steamer. It works like a magic and I gave myself an upgraded pedicure. It felt so good to remove all those annoying calluses that I can never smooth out evenly. I am getting another one for my mom.

It takes less than a minute to heat up fully. I can steam three polo shirts and three pairs of pants without having to worry about refilling the water.

Ultimately, by using this process, we’ve been left with the top ten clothes steamers loved by parents, trusted by experts and rated by customers, so you can shop safely knowing that every product has been thoroughly vetted. Why you should trust us If you plan on using your clothes steamer for one-off occasions or touch-ups, a smaller tank will suffice, ideally with a transparent casing so you know when to refill it. A traditional steam iron may be great at putting off a lot of steam, but those models typically don't function well as an upright handheld steamer. We were intrigued by the Salav Handheld Clothes Steamer + Iron 2-in-1, which looks like a handheld steamer and has a ceramic-coated iron plate to press clothes as well. While it definitely has its quirks, we were overall pleased with this steamer's performance during testing. They even have a Beautural professional steam iron for those of you who mean serious business. And if you’re a bit clumsy like me, their Beautural steamer instructions are super easy to follow. No PhD required, promise.

Is a clothes steamer better than ironing?

Continuous steam means the unit emits steam for several seconds at once, often up to 15 seconds in a handheld steamer, so you don’t have to keep pressing the button. We wanted to put these steamers through the paces by testing capacities, effectiveness as well as practical use testing to discover any potential issues.
