About this deal

The most important piece, however, is the Bordeaux Cover. It includes both One Penny red and Two Penny blue examples affixed to an envelope but not used. It was last reported as being sold in 1993 at a Swiss auction for 6,123,750 Swiss Francs. Due to the recent Ball Cover sale, it seems likely this has appreciated even higher. Country:

The heavier the cancellation mark the less valuable the stamp and the cancellation mark are. That does not mean, though, that lighter cancellation marks will bring in much more than darker cancellation marks. The important factor is that the cancellation mark does not obscure any part of the stamp. When a collector buys a postage stamp or post card on its first day of release, a special “first day of issue” postmark is applied. Envelopes or mailed items with this kind of postal cancel are called first day covers. Special postmarks and postal cancellations Before you start your stamp collection, it’s crucial to have an understanding of what makes stamps collectible and valuable.Railway post office (R.P.O.) cancels refer to cancellations applied on mail sorted on trains. The first United States cancellation with the word "railroad" dates from 1838. [2] The last Railway Post Office (R.P.O.) operated by the United States closed in 1977. [11] Cancellations, however, were applied by hand, had no standardization regarding how they were applied, and could often vary depending on who applied the cancellation mark. A New British Cancellation Mark Ship cancels were added to stamps that were mailed on or carried on a ship, commonly a steamer ship in the late 19th–early 20th centuries. [2] In French, the cancellation reads " Paquebot". [11] Beginner collectors are advised from the outset to avoid torn stamps; however, not all torn stamps are worthless. Even a torn example of a desirable stamp is still collectable and can, therefore, command a price.

To carry out stamp grading accurately, a degree of specialist philatelic knowledge is required. But even if you enjoy collecting stamps as a hobby rather than as an investment, you can still learn about the many different factors that must be considered when trying to determine a stamp’s value. Coming from many countries and across a long history, the most expensive stamps in the world are certain to surprise you. Perhaps the military blunder allowing others to identify military correspondence is your favorite. Or maybe you love the most expensive Mauritius stamps. From memory it has most of the Die I GVI, but more roos and GV, including OS perfins (even the odd Single WMK GV and a 6d Roo perf OS Third WMK). Your non-barcoded stamps can be exchanged for new barcoded versions through our Stamp Swap Out scheme. To swap out your stamps, simply:The Commonwealth and British Empire and Great Britain Concise catalogues have developed a few categories to define the marginal positioning of a stamp. To be clear, I collect predominantly cancelled stamps. Since my first “stamp” experience: my Mom giving me at age 4 or 5 the envelopes from incoming mail and letting me cut the stamps off (primarly 3¢Jeffersons) and paste them in rows on cardboard (think “busy work”), I’ve been attracted to used stamps vs. mint. To each his own, of course, but that extra cancel layer for me can add immeasurabley to the visual appeal of a stamp, not to mention the fact that stamps were made to be used. (Call me a purist…or crazy.)

Slogan cancellations contain a slogan, perhaps commemorative or advertising, in the killer box. See further below. Such stamps did not see legitimate postal use so they are not postally used and should not be considered as used stamps at all. Indeed, some catalogues have separate price columns for mint never hinged, mint hinged, used, cto and stamps on cover. Worth more than some of the most valuable paintings, the Mauritius Post Office stamps are the most expensive stamps in the world. Colour changedue to water-damage or sunlight can sometimes have a very significant effect. Seriously faded stamps are viewed in the same way as ‘washed’examples – more common items being ‘virtually worthless’, rarer ones rating up to one-fifth of catalogue, providing that the fading is not too serious. Tone spots – the brownish spots encountered on many stamps which have been stored in damp conditions – especially in the tropics – will also reduce the value of a stamp or cover. In the early period of the issuance of postage stamps in the United States a number of patents were issued for cancelling devices or machines that increased (or were purported to increase) the difficulty of washing off and reusing postage stamps. These methods generally involved the scraping or cutting-away of part of the stamp, or perhaps punching a hole through its middle. (These forms of cancellation must be distinguished from perfins, a series of small holes punched in stamps, typically by private companies as an anti-theft device.) A friend in New Zealand is sending me a cover with some of NZ’s Covid related Teddy Bear stamps on it. His post office at Nelson refused to cancel any of the correct use stamps, but said they would affix the New Zealand post 13 July 2020 mark that you can see.
