About this deal

The book can be used throughout key stage one and two. At key stage one level it can be read to the class by the teacher during story time whilst the children enjoy the illustrations, and then read independently during key stage two once the children become more developed readers. The knight in the book made the dragon laugh. Can you make the dragon laugh too? Do you have some good jokes? Can you write them on our template and then try them out on your family, in person, on the phone or maybe on FaceTime. Did they make them laugh?

These performances are provided for those who use British Sign Language. The interpreter will be at the front of the stage and lit with a spotlight. They will provide a linguistic and artistic interpretation of the show for people who are D/deaf or for whom BSL is their preferred language. You could provide them with a few key words such as ‘ghosts’, ‘country’, ‘encyclopedia’, ‘fairy tales’ and ‘thieves’. They then have to match the key word to the book on the shelf. Every pirate needs a telescope to help them find the treasure. Can you make one using the list of things below;

Before Malcolm and I had our three sons we used to go busking together and I would write special songs for each country; the best one was in Italian about pasta. I love shiny things! And every jewel thief loves treasures, just like the thief in the book. Can you find some small pebbles and stones and turn them into treasure? How about using pens or paints? Or even wrapping them in tinfoil?

Lo recomiendo muchísimo para trabajar con niños que se inician en la lectura ya que ofrece numerosas oportunidades de adentrarse en el mágico mundo de los cuentos. Describe the different types of books featured in the story. Can you find the story books, a magazine, a comic, an encyclopedia? How are they similar / different? Relaxed Performances are provided for people who would benefit from a more relaxed environment, or are uncomfortable with sudden lighting changes or loud noises, including those with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, sensory or communication needs or a learning disability. Find out more here.Make sure everyone is listening before you begin. You should allocate a part of the room for telling stories. If you don’t have the luxury of moving tables, chairs or even children then have at least the ritual of clearing desks and so creating a change in the pace of the lesson. If you don’t have their undivided attention to begin with it will be a hard slog to get their attention while reading and you will spoil the experience for those who are trying to listen when you stop to tell others to listen. Look at the different characters shown on the front cover. What stories include those characters? What adventures might they have in this book? Choose one of the book titles featured in the book. Could you write the story that might appear in this book?

Charlie Cook’s name has alliteration. Can you think of other names that have alliteration, e.g. Sally Smith, Harry Hopkins? Could you write a story about one of these? Furthermore, the beautiful and creative illustrations add to the fun. This is a great introductory text to use as an example of a story with key stage one children. The rhyming throughout is a trademark of Donaldson’s stories, subtly introducing poetic language and new vocabulary. Each illustration reflects the type of text allowing children to see the difference between a comic, a magazine or a traditional fairy tale. This is useful as part of the national curriculum, key stage one children identify the features of different types of texts and produce their own in English. What is your favourite book? Could your class make a set of posters to advertise your favourite books?A listening task could be to write down all the words they hear at the end of a sentence that rhyme. They could do this on their own with the first listening and then put any words they have written down onto the board. Compare and find any that rhyme. They can listen again and see if they find any other words which rhyme with their word bank they had previously compiled. You can spend a whole lesson just with the double spread of pictures of Charlie’s books on his bookshelf. Each book has a symbolic image that represents the genre e.g. a ghost for Out of this World, a collection of ghost stories. Or a pirate and ship for Shiver me Timbers or My First Encyclopedia with a series of objects labelled with the first letter. With this picture you could make a poster sized version for the whole class to see. You could Tippex out the titles leaving just the illustrations. The children could then predict what sort of books they are. On a design feature, the book has great endpapers which feature Scheffler's design of bookends encompassing a selection of books featured in the story'

El texto es sencillo y presenta diferentes fuentes y formatos que ayudan al lector a descubrir las múltiples formas de comunicación escrita; cómic, periódico, revistas, recetas, entre otros. Once they have the original titles and have a general idea of the content of each of the books you can move onto which one would they want to buy and why? Remember at this stage their choice is only based on part of the cover. With storybooks the illustrations are the key to animating the text for the listener. For language learners they are all the more important as they can guide a learner to a better understanding of the language they are listening to.

Cabe destacar que la historia es cíclica por lo que no cuenta con los tres elementos estructurales que caracterizan a los cuentos; presentación, nudo y desenlace.
