About this deal

Horses running in novice races are generally young and inexperienced in jumps, which means they can surpass or fall short of expectations. Frontrunner won the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton in December then fended off Edwardstone and Energumene to win the Clarence House here in January. Must do it all again – the hard way.

If Hermes Allen, the second-favourite, fails to extend his unbeaten record in the opening Ballymore Novice Hurdle, it could all come down to the Champion Chase, where Edwardstone and Gary Moore’s Editeur Du Gite are up against last year’s winner, Energumene. The Betfair Chase is one of the most prestigious races in the jumps racing calendar. It is the first Grade 1 contest of the jumps season and is run over a distance of three miles and one and a half furlongs. The race distance is around half a furlong shy of the Cheltenham Gold Cup distance, making it a key trial for the blue riband race at the Cheltenham Festival in March. The 14-time champion trainer Paul Nicholls has a fabulous record in the Betfair Chase, winning the race on six occasions. Nicholls’ record six Betfair Chase wins have come courtesy of four victories with the great Kauto Star (who won it in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011) and two wins with Silvianaco Conti (in 2012 and 2014). The latter will almost certainly strip fitter for his effort to finish second in the Charlie Hall at Wetherby earlier this month and will be a huge threat here, but he may have to settle for the runners-up berth once again - with regular partner Harry Cobden opting to head to Ascot. At Ascot, Pic D'Orhy won the 1965 Chase after two-time Cheltenham Festival winner Shishkin planted at the start.

Chase Purdy – 2017 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Results". Racing-Reference. NASCAR Digital Media, LLC . Retrieved June 23, 2018. Protektorat was nothing short of dazzling when winning this first-time out in similar conditions 12 months ago and while he was behind Bravemansgame in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last March, he has shown he’s more than capable of handling attritional conditions. Run over three miles and one and a half furlongs, the Betfair Chase is the opening race of the jumps ‘triple crown’, which is followed by the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park and brought to a close with the biggest prize of all, the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup. I don't like making excuses, but I wasn't too worried about the run at Kelso as the ground was heavy and we always know that he needs his first run of the season. He can confuse us sometimes when it comes to identifying his fitness because he has such enthusiasm for the game that it appears he's straighter than he actually is.

Lower-category riders on a whole have less endurance and poorer pacing than higher-category riders, so their pace will fall off near the end of the race while the higher category riders have more to give. Cheltenham Festival boasts some top-level novice chases, including the Golden Miller Novices’ Chase and the Centenary Novices’ Handicap Chase. This latter race boasts handicap rules between 0 and 145, which means horses of varied quality level come together to run. The Queen Mother Champion Chase takes place at 3.30pm on Wednesday March 15 and is the feature race on day two of the Cheltenham Festival. Queen Mother Champion Chase: the runner and riders There are numerous well-known trainers operating in the Cotswolds including Jonjo O'Neill, Richard Phillips, Tom George, Nigel Twiston-Davies, and latterly Kim Bailey.

The two biggest Hunter Chases are the Aintree Fox Hunters' Chase and Cheltenham Foxhunter Chase. The Aintree Fox Hunters' is run as the feature race on the first day of the Grand National meeting over one circuit of the Grand National course. This gives amateur riders the chance to jump these famous fences before the professionals. As steeplechasing entered its modern era, the Cheltenham Festival became the pinnacle of the season, providing a series of championship races at which virtually all top horses would be targeted.See the list of Grade 1-3 National Hunt races and the list of Group 1-3 Flat races Major National Hunt festivals [ edit ] Cheltenham [ edit ] Distant second to Energumene in this last year represented a pleasing effort. Hit and miss this term but once more warmed up by winning the Denman Chase at Newbury. The feature event, in fact, is the only race on the second afternoon at Cheltenham in which British-trained runners are in the majority, with five out of seven. Ireland fields 16 of 26 in the Coral Cup, a dozen of 20 runners in the Grand Annual Handicap Chase and no fewer than 18 of 24 in the concluding Champion Bumper. Know the gaps between groups at the start, then watch those gaps change during the race. Time gap knowledge is vital if you want to race smart, as illustrated in these three examples: Once a horse has won a steeplechase, from the next season they will not be allowed to enter novice chases unless the win comes in the final two months of a season, in which case they can run novices until the end of October that year.

We're under no illusions that it's going to be a big challenge against some proper Gold Cup contenders, but I think he's earned his chance to prove that he's up to this sort of standard and we're really looking forward to it," said Russell, a William Hill ambassador. "It will tell us where we stand with him and whether the Gold Cup is a realistic aim." Here are a few ways that happens: You’re an D rider 30km into a 40km race. The C group began 4 minutes after you, and that gap is now down to 30 seconds. Your group is going to get caught by the C’s well before the finish, so you need to decide if you want to up the pace and bring other D’s with you, or just ease and wait for the C’s. There's more Grade 1 action in Ireland where last season's Champion Hurdle runner-up State Man will face three rivals on his seasonal reappearance in the Grade 1 Morgiana Hurdle (2.35) at Punchestown on Saturday.

FAQ

Organised steeplechasing in Britain began with annual events being staged cross country over a number of fields, hedges and brooks, the earliest most notable of these being the St Albans Steeplechase (first run in 1830). For some years, there was no regulation of steeplechasing. The sport gained a reputation as being a bastard relation of flat-racing and consequently fell into decline. He was in supreme form here last year, though he didn’t quite reach those levels in two subsequent starts, finishing fifth in the Cheltenham Gold Cup – three places behind the re-opposing Bravemansgame. With all due respect to the outsiders of the seven-strong field, it looks very much like a three-horse race for the two-mile chasers’ championship event, and thus a repeat of the Clarence House Chase in January, which switched to Cheltenham after being frozen off at its traditional home at Ascot. On the face of it, the form there makes a nonsense of today’s betting, as Editeur Du Gite, the narrow winner from Edwardstone there, is the outsider of the three principals, while Energumene, who was six-and-a-half lengths away in third, is challenging Edwardstone for favouritism. The Cheltenham Foxhunter is run after the Gold Cup over the same distance and is often referred to as the amateur Gold Cup.
