About this deal

Everything I planted germinated, many still flowering happily as we go into October. It’s cheap and looks as cool as you’ll get. Bam, full marks for this propagator. Even as I write I’m excited about using it again in March 2016. Please note that the right to return goods which are not faulty does not apply to any goods which have been made to your own specifications.

Take a look at the product’s dimensions and match them up with the space you have available – propagators come in a range of sizes, so you’ll find one to fit your space with a bit of searching! The plastic is nice and robust, especially the little green trays and lids, which I really like (lids have vents I never had closed). Propagators aren’t really the sort of thing that looks stylish, I think the Super 7 is a little bit though, especially when different seedlings start germinating. It’s cool and compact. After 28 days, items can still be returned at the discretion of our staff, excluding garden tools, electrical goods, and plants under our 1-year guarantee.

Single temperature propagator maintains the temperature at a constant 19°C for an optimal environment for your seedlings. Generally, a height of around 20 cm will allow enough space for your seedlings to establish properly, giving them enough time to grow good roots and 3 – 4 full leaves before having to transplant them.

This compact electric propagator is an ideal plant and flower nursery solution for your windowsill. It features seven mini propagators which allow you to grow a wide variety of different plants in just one unit for great convenience. The non-thermostatically controlled 13-watt carbon fibre heated base unit provides the ideal conditions for growth by evenly distributing heat and raising the ambient compost temperature by up to 8°C. A great way to ensure perfect light conditions for successful propagation while protecting your seedlings from draught and cold. Features and Benefits Warms the compost evenly by about 8°C above ambient temperature, so for me, it can maintain a temperature of around 20-26°c in my kitchen. Plus, if you get a propagator with a thermostat, it will regulate the temperature and save energy by turning off when it reaches a certain temperature. Also, the cells can be prone to a condensation build up, even when the vents are open. I suppose though this is just what happens when you mildly heat something and contain it! Over time I’ve learnt that by switching the unit off and giving the cells a bit of breather everything clears up nicely.

Garland Super 7 Electric Windowsill Propagator - 76cm

If you really need a self-watering propagator or your budget doesn’t stretch to a heated unit, consider an alternate form of heat and light. In the UK, if you don’t have a sunny and warm enough windowsill to germinate your seeds then you may need to consider a grow lamp, perhaps one on a timer so you don’t have to remember to put it on and off on the right schedule. Then, you’ll need to multiply the wattage of the propagator by the number of hours it’ll be used each day. Divide this number by 1000 and multiply by 14 (or your specific kWh rate). Some smaller units have individual ‘cells’ for each pot so you don’t have as much free range with how many different seeds you can plant at a time.

Electric propagators provide the perfect environment for seed germination, making it possible to grow all year round. If you want to grow different plants at different temperatures, choose a propagator with several individual growing pods (known as ‘cells’). Make sure the cells have vents to regulate the temperatures. There was only one way to test the EarlyGrow 3-Bay Heated Electric Propagator! I took my kids to our local garden centre, where they chose a small variety of fruit and vegetable seeds they wanted to grow. I tried to guide them within the suggested ‘germination months’, but they were naturally drawn to the strawberries! Hey, might as well give it a try right?! So we planted strawberry, peas, and giant pepper seeds. My boys ready for some planting! For example, if you run a propagator of 100 W for an hour, at this rate, it will cost you 1.4p for that hour. A propagator of 50 W will cost 0.7p for an hour. And a propagator of 22 W will cost you 0.3 p per hour. Thanks to the seven separate cells, you can plant different types of seeds in each one if you wish, and each cell has its own vent to control the temperature according to the different plant. The design itself is very simple. This unit consists of a heated tray with a ventilated plastic lid – you supply your own trays/pots, but it can fit 2 x 24-pot plant trays, so that gives you a good idea of its size in practical terms.

Reviews

Given that propagation can be a little hit and miss, having space in this large 52 x 42.5 x 28cm unit for so many seeds is one way to help increase the chances of success! This depends on the plants you are trying to grow and the region that you are in. Some seeds require certain temperatures to germinate. Given the cold British weather, a heated propagator would be of service to you all year-round and can speed up the amount of time it takes for seeds to germinate and also the success rate. For example, peppers often germinate at a much faster rate in a heated propagator. This model has an internal water reservoir and on top of this, there is a lining of capillary matting that attracts the water. The seed tray sits on top of this and the plants then draw water from the capillary matting as and when needed. As long as there is water in the tray, the plants can’t over or underwater themselves. The base tray holds seven individual seed trays so you can sow seven different varieties of seed if you wish.
