Hydroleca is both decorative and practical. It gives houseplants the perfect finish; just place a layer of the clay granules around every plant. You can also spread hydroleca over a shallow tray and place houseplants pots over the layer. Be sure your pots have drainage holes. This prevents houseplants sitting directly in water which is bad for the roots.

To avoid overwatering your plants in soil, you have to pay close attention to how dry/wet the soil is. This is not at all the case for Leca, which is why it's so much easier to properly water your plants. We'll look at exactly how Leca helps you do this in the next section where we look at how Leca works. Hydroponics nutrients (or fertilizer) contain special ingredients that your normal plant fertilizer doesn't have. Normal plant fertilizers don't need these ingredients, because the soil provides your plant with these nutrients. Since Leca doesn't contain any nutrients, the hydroponics fertilizer needs to add these missing ingredients to keep your plant healthy. This is why you can't use normal fertilizer for your plants in Leca: it's missing key ingredients. How do you use the hydroponic fertilizer with Leca?Large items are sent via a standard 48L (48 hour large) service. Large items take from 2 working days to arrive. Earlier in this plant care guide, I mentioned that Leca doesn't provide your plants with the nutrients they need to grow properly. Leca only takes care of watering your plants. As such, you'll need to add nutrients to water yourself. These nutrients are slightly different from the fertilizer you would give to plants growing in soil. But what are the key differences? What are hydroponics nutrients (fertilizer)?

A layer of Hydroleca looks attractive laid out on top of pots as a topper and also helps retain moisture, adds humidity and helps to avoid evaporation Hardy begonias can be left in the ground in winter in sheltered, warm locations. The most common type found in the UK is Begonia grandis subsp. evansiana. Because of their excellent inner clay structure, your balls will never become rotten or decayed - meaning that you can keep using, and reusing LECA to grow your very own bureau of indoor tropical cuttings with exceptionally strong roots!

While sempervivum appreciate being watered in dry in spring or summer weather, they can survive happily without.

Okay, all of these are great, right? But there’s one more quality that leca brings to the table that most other materials don’t. J. Arthur Bower's Hydroleca is a lightweight clay aggregate formed by special clay minerals expanded at a high temperature. This produces ceramic "pebbles" with a smooth outer crust and a honeycomb interior. These pebbles are sterile, non-toxic, inert, resistant to algae, extremely strong and can absorb up to 40% of their own weight in water. They are not damaged by frost and have good insulating properties. Pot up offsets (mini rosettes) in spring into a free-draining, gritty compost. You can make your own using half and half sharp grit and John Innes No.2 or buy a ready-made cacti compost. Plantlets may already have roots, so tease rosettes apart carefully. Keep moist and out of direct sun and they should establish in 4-6 weeks.

Fill bottomless containers, (25cm (10in) diameter, 30cm (12in) tall) with growing media (that used in growbags is ideal) and plant young plants in April. Special pots of bituminized paper are available for this purpose, but you can use any container that is open at the base. Houseplants will benefit if you place the pots on a layer of moist hydroleca in a deep dish - the additional humidity helps the plants
