About this deal

I have never been one to really mix my thrillers with the paranormal but I thought the paranormal wasn’t over done here. Highly preferred this book to Kathryn Foxfield’s previous book, ‘Good Girls Die First’ and I’d recommend it. Written and directed by Andrew Mecham and Matthew Whedon, “Behind You” concerns two sullen young sisters who are put under the care of their estranged Aunt Beth ( Jan Broberg) after their mother died. The younger sister, Claire ( Elizabeth Birkner), doesn't like talking to strangers after the loss, and clings to her stuffed animal while older sister Olivia ( Addy Miller) tries to assist with communication. The two have a great deal of suspicion about their aunt, who voices early on that she doesn't want them there, and the neighbor Charles ( Philip Brodie), who plainly looks like he's up to no good. Aunt Beth tells them they absolutely must not go into the basement, or take the elevator, and so it's only convenient when this bossy host is also revealed to be a murderer. But there is much more to that story, and to the house, especially as young Claire gets lured down to said basement, where an evil spirit wants to get out of a mirror. The plot of this story is not really pacy, but slow and engaging as the teenagers' personalities are disclosed to the reader along with their secrets, making it suitable for the 13+ reader, confident/non confident who are not afraid of things that go bump in the night. Therefore, not for the nervous reader. The story would be great for book clubs and for intervention groups as it's completely engaging with lots of discussion points. This is the second book by this talented author, who really knows how to build suspense and create an unsettling atmosphere; she clearly deserves a place in any school library as her books will be very popular. I also just realised that I started the year by reading two books about ghosts even though they both couldn’t be any more different.

unfortunately, this book was quite disappointing ! let me preface this by saying i never usually read horror/thriller—a friend gifted it to me—, so i don't have much to compare it to, but i'm still going to try and write a constructive review !but let me tell you this wasn’t nearly as scary as I expected it to be, there was like one thing that was actually scary and the rest was okay I guess. also, as an avid romance reader, i never thought i'd say this one day, but the romance in this book was completely unnecessary. like, the plot would have been the exact same without it. Lex and Liam only kissed once, and her internal monologues barely mentioned any kind of feelings towards him ? plus, they only knew each other for one night, so it felt unrealistic and like the author just wanted to add romance for the sake of it. The panto season has stretched to last from the start of December to the end of January, and become essential to the UK's theatre economy. A solid and fast-paced thriller. It's Behind You reminded me of the Scream tv show, where the stakes are high and the killer is the last person you'd expect, but it's too entertaining and over the top to actually be scared.
