About this deal

Firstly during the summer months the tundra area becomes alive, and is an excellent resource of food for the Rangifer tarandus. By moving northwards the Caribou can take advantage of all this food that no other animals can use. You can find wild herds of Reindeer across northern Europe, Asia and North America. How Long do Reindeer Live? If you clear an area of snow in the forest reindeer can be attracted to the uncovered vegetation. In my experience, this is particularly the case in years where the snow is very deep or if the snow has gone through several freeze-thaw cycles and is, therefore, crusty at some level or at multiple levels, thus making it hard for the reindeer to access what is under the snow. Areas cleared of snow can be attractive to reindeer, particularly in years where the snow is deep or crusty. Photo: Paul Kirtley. Reindeer in deep snow. Sweden, 2009. Photo: Paul Kirtley Reindeer ( Rangifer tarandus) are species of deer found at high latitudes and a number of longitudes around the world. They inhabit cool climates, and are native to the arctic, sub-arctic, tundra, boreal, and mountain ranges of Northern Europe, Siberia, and in North America, where this species is known as the Caribou.

In summer, they’ll spend up to 20 hours a day eating, and pretty much double their body weight in preparation for the colder months. They can live almost entirely off those fat stores during the winter months, eating only the odd bit of lichen or moss. They become very static in the winter, keeping still as much as possible to conserve precious energy. We see the same pattern in reindeer at the Zoo. They don’t exactly shut down, but they’re definitely on a go-slow. Reindeer's eyes change colour Here are a few simple crafts that are perfect for little ones (and can be made with school-aged children too). These reindeer ideas make the cutest Christmas keepsakes and sweet memories of time crafting together. When Caribou reach the forests they disperse and try to find shelter and food beneath the trees. What Causes These Migrations? The antlers can have various numbers of tines. At the end of the antlers may be a short part that is flattened into a short blade.

Reindeer feed on lichen, notably reindeer moss in the hills but also various species of “old man’s beard” in the forests. Disturbance in an area of snow that has been blown thin by the wind, making access to the vegetation underneath relatively easy. Norway, March 2010. Photo: Paul Kirtley The majority of Eurasian Tundra Reindeer are semi-domesticated or domesticated. Indigenous northern peoples such as the Sami in Fennoscandia and the Nenets and Evenks of Russia have coexisted with and relied upon semi-domesticated reindeer for hundreds, if not thousands of years. Reindeer Subspecies I originally published this Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer Footprint 7 years ago on my old blog when my eldest was 1! The post is no longer visible so I'm sharing the idea again for a bit of festive themed "reiny" day craft fun. The design is simple: one footprint with two handprints at the top. For best results you want to swap the hands over so the right hand is on the left and vice versa. After the calves are born, Caribou continue northwards to new feeding grounds on the tundra where they spread out and spend the summer. They are well known for feeding on one type of lichen in particular, a food source which is known as Reindeer Lichen ( Cladina rangiferina). Reindeer have been valued by humans for even longer, providing meat, skins, antler, bones, sinew and more to stone age hunters.
